Review by Ron Risman - July 2005

Product Introduction

The Samsung MM-A800 is a first here at Cameratown.com, our first camera phone review. As camera phones increase in resolution and add features, we believe that in the future, most consumer photographs will be taken with camera phones - especially as image quality and features improve - as they inevitabely will.

The Samsung MM-A800 is the first 2.0-megapixel resolution camera phone to be released in the U.S. While 2-megapixel resolution seems pretty archaic in a world of 5-, 6- and 8-megapixel cameras, there is enough resolution to make photo quality 4"x6" prints, assuming the lens quality and compression levels do not hinder the image quality.

How does Sprint's Samsung MM-A800 handle as a digital camera? Read our review to find out!

First Impression

This review will focus mainly on the photo features of the phone, though I did try out some of the other features of this phone, and there are many. Most impressive are the message dictation, voice control, and signal sensitivity. Other features such as audio and video streaming, including Sprint TV, show promise but are hindered by inconsistent network streaming - at least in this pre-production model.

What's in the box

  • Samsung MM-A800 Camera Phone
  • Samsung USB to Printer Cable
  • 32MB Transflash Memory Card (SanDisk)
  • Transflash - SD Adapter (SanDisk)
  • Battery
  • Product Documentation

Sprint's Samsung MM-A800 Cameraphone has a split personality. On one side is a very full-featured cell phone with slide out keyboard, vibrant color screen, and the ability to stream video clips, music, and view photos. Flip the camera over and you have what looks to be an easy-to-use 2.0-megapixel point-and-shoot digital camera - complete with sliding lens cover and flash. If you placed the phone on a table with the camera side up, few people will know that it's also a phone. Place it with the phone side up, and - well, you get the picture.
