The EOS 650D has a new 'Hybrid CMOS' sensor that now includes pixels dedicated to phase detection autofocus (in a similar fashion to Nikon's 1 J1 and 1 V1 mirrorless cameras). The Hybrid AF system uses these to set the lens quickly to roughly the correct distance, then uses contrast detection AF to fine-tune focus. In principle, this should provide faster and more certain focusing for live view and video shooting compared to previous cameras that relied on CDAF alone. ..."

Announced in June 2012, it replaces the massively popular Rebel T3i / 600D which has held the upper entry-level position in the EOS line-up since its introduction in Feb 2011. Following Canon's usual practice, the T3i / 600D won't be discontinued, but will drop down the range to occupy a position just below the Rebel T4i / 650D. ...

| Hands-on Preview (Summary): "Externally, the Canon T4i looks pretty similar to the T3i. Size and weight are little changed, and most controls are in the same places, although the Movie mode jumps from the Mode dial to the Power switch, and the Display button vanishes. ...
There are quite a few other important changes, as well. The Canon EOS T4i is the first Rebel-series model to receive a new DIGIC 5 image processor, said to be around five times faster than the previous DIGIC 4 chip. This extra performance is harnessed to allow both faster burst shooting performance of up to five frames per second, and a wider ISO sensitivity range of 100 to 12,800 equivalents (expandable to 25,600 equivalent; movie capture is limited to a maximum of 6,400 equivalent, however). ..." |
