Fujifilm FinePix F100fd Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.92 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "In the F-series, the new top dog is the F100fd, a feature packed 12MP model featuring Fujifilm's Super CCD HR VIII sensor. The sensor uses the same technology as the top of the range S5 Pro DSLR. Without being too technical about it, the sensor uses a unique pixel array designed to capture a broader dynamic range, in other words the full range of tones from highlight to shadow detail and everything in between. This is especially important in very bright sunlight, when deep shadows and glaring highlights are common. ...

Despite my initial reservations about both the need for a 12MP compact and the amount of noise it would produce, the images from the F100fd are rather good. Exposures are bang on 99 percent of the time and image clarity is very clear. More pixels theoretically means sharper images, and generally the F100fd captures plenty of sharp detail, especially when images are viewed at less than 100 percent or printed up to A4. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Fujifilm FinePix F100fd is the latest addition to the popular F-series range of compact digital cameras, replacing the previous F50fd. With a 12 megapixel, 8th Generation Super CCD sensor, 5x wide angle optical zoom lens (28-140mm), and a 2.7 inch LCD screen, the F100fd offers some significant improvements, and it also features new expanded dynamic range capture functionality, Face Detection 3.0 and ISO settings of up to ISO 12800. Mark Goldstein discovers if the Fujifilm F100fd offers enough to stand out from the crowd."

Review (Summary): "With a 12-megapixel sensor, a quality 28-140mm zoom lens, and several wide Dynamic Range options, the Fujifilm F100fd has quite a lot to recommend it. The FinePix F100fd has one of the most advanced Face Detection features we've ever seen, capable of detecting faces from all angles, including from the side, and even upside down. ...

.. Despite its slightly sluggish cycle times, the Fujifilm FinePix F100fd is a good overall performer. Color and exposure were both good, and helpful automatic tools like Face Detection, Dynamic Range, and the preset Scene modes proved useful and responsive to a variety of situations. ..."

Review (Summary): "The FinePix F100fd doesn't exactly break from the Megapixel madness phenomenon - it too has a 12 Megapixel sensor, like the F50. However, it uses a new 8th-generation SuperCCD HR sensor and a new image processor, so hopefully it will be better able to deal with the noise that comes at such a high resolution. ...

... The F100fd performs slightly better than other compact cameras, up to a point (ISO 800), but above that, images become a noisy mess. The camera is marred by other flaws as well, including a slow lens, difficult-to-access menu system, and poor battery life. The FinePix F100fd certainly isn't a bad camera - it's just an average one - which is a disappointment, considering its heritage. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Fujifilm Finepix F100fd is the successor to the F50fd camera, replacing it as the top-of-the-range model in the popular F-Series. The F100fd offers a 12 megapixel, 8th Generation Super CCD sensor and 5x wide angle optical zoom lens (28-140mm equivalent) complete with CCD-shift dual image stabilization system.

Photography Blog writes that due to "the loss of this significant advantage (lack of A / S / M modes) means that the Fujifilm Finepix F100fd is now a fairly run-of the mill compact digital camera that's no longer the de facto pocket camera for the aspiring photographer. ..."
