Canon Powershot SD790 IS Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.46 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "The Canon IXUS 90 IS (Powershot SD790 IS in the U.S.) camera has a stylish and a compact trendy body offering 10 Megapixels of resolution. With the help of a 3x optical zoom, unfortunately no 28mm wide angle, Canon's optical Image Stabilizer (IS) with lens-shifting feature, PureColor LCD II and integrated enhanced intelligent software the Canon Digital IXUS 90 is a camera with powerful features packed in a neat and compact size designer housing. ...

... The Canon IXUS 90 IS scores really well on image quality, colour reproduction and user’s ease. The limited zoom capacity of the camera remains a pity. I am sure there is a reason for not applying it, but personally I find a 28mm wide angle a feature that Canon should not have missed. Wide angle has many advantages and not only for the enhanced photographer. ..."

... 8-megapixel Canon PowerShot SD850 IS and another 10-megapixel pocket camera - the Panasonic Lumix FX35. Up to ISO 400 the SD790 IS is a clear winner with less noise than the other cameras and natural color and contrast. ..."

Review (Summary) : "Announced on the 13th of March 2008, the Canon Digital IXUS 90 IS / SD790 is one of Canon's new ultra compact, ultra stylish digital cameras with image stabilization, and features a 3x optical zoom lens, a 3" screen, VGA video recording, a 10 megapixel sensor and face detection focus. ...

... The Canon Digital IXUS 90 IS / SD790 is an ultra stylish compact camera that provides an impressive 3" screen, 10 megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom lens and image stabilization. Noise is controlled quite well considering the camera has 10 megapixels, and image quality is generally very good. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Canon SD790 IS Digital ELPH features a 10-megapixel 1/2.3-inch CCD imager and a Canon-branded 3x optical zoom lens with image stabilization, which covers a fairly standard range of 35-105mm equivalent ...

The Canon SD790 IS has only one strike against it and that's its 3x optical zoom. You might think the lack of a Manual mode would be another, but the Canon SD790 IS is designed for taking great snapshots. With its DIGIC III processor, it does just that. ..."

Review (Summary): "Among Canon's new high-def video-capable point-and-shooters, the $279.99 (list) 12.1-megapixel Canon PowerShot SD780 IS is the smallest and the least expensive. To make the camera so, however, Canon has compromised on the SD780's screen and button sizes - though, fortunately, not on image quality or ease of use. ...

... I took the SD780 out and about in New York City in everything from daylight to a low-lit barroom and was not disappointed in its performance in the least. As all my lab tests indicated, its images came out super-sharp, clean, and with near-perfect color. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Canon PowerShot SD790 IS Digital ELPH ($349) is an ultra-compact camera features a 10 Megapixel CCD, 3X optical zoom lens, image stabilization, and a large 3-inch LCD display. It's the follow-up to the PowerShot SD750, which was introduced in February of 2007. The biggest changes on the SD790 are the higher resolution CCD, and the addition of optical image stabilization ...

... It took well-exposed photos with accurate, vivid colors. Images are nice and sharp, save for the corners, where there is often blurring (especially at wide-angle). I saw some vignetting in one or two shots, as well. In good light, the camera keeps noise under control until you pass ISO 400, with even the ISO 800 remaining usable for small prints. ..."

Review (Summary): "ith its all-metal build and what Canon is describing as a 'chiseled' faceplate, there's no denying that the new Digital IXUS 90 IS (SD790 IS in the U.S.), while physically larger than the recently-announced IXUS 80 IS (SD770 IS in the U.S.), continues the range's tradition of stylish, good-looking pocket cameras. That much is expected. Instead of the IXUS 80's eight megapixel headline specification married to a 2.5-inch rear LCD however, the Canon Digital IXUS 90 IS features 10 megapixels and a larger 3-inch LCD with 15 levels of brightness adjustment, though the resolution remains at its little brother's 230k pixels.

... For me, image noise could be better tackled and the OIS made yet more effective, meaning there are snapshot cameras out there delivering better images under a wider variety of conditions – the latest 10 megapixel Lumix models from Panasonic spring to mind. That said, the Canon Digital IXUS 90 IS exudes slightly more class when it comes to overall build and design, and at the end of the day it feels that you really are getting what you're paying for, ..."

Review (Summary): "The Canon Digital IXUS 100 IS (also know as the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS) is the slimmest ever Canon compact camera, measuring a mere 18.4mm thick. This 12 megapixel model has a stylish ultra-slim metal body, 3x zoom lens with Optical Image Stabilizer , 2.5 inch LCD screen with optical viewfinder, and new Smart AUTO mode. Face Detection, Blink Detection plus Face Self-Timer and Auto Red-Eye Correction technologies promise to capture better people shots, and the Canon IXUS ...

Those who choose the Canon Digital IXUS 100 IS as their travel companion of choice are obviously favoring portability (or fashion) above all else, but luckily the camera doesn't fall down on performance, and, given its diminutive dimensions, it's a surprise that there aren't more inherent compromises. ..."
