Phase One P25 Medium Format 645 Digital Back Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.57 (out of 10)
In early 2004 Phase announced that they would be bringing out two new medium format digital backs, the P20 and P25. These would be evolutions of the chips and electronics used in the H20 and H25 backs that were introduced in the second half of 2003.
The focus of this first-look review is the P25, the first fully self-contained 22 Megapixel back that features almost full-frame 645 coverage. The P20 back is essentially identical to the P25 except that it features a square, reduced frame 16 Megapixel chip. According to Phase One even the shooting and write speeds are the same between the backs, though the file size is of course smaller on the P20 than that from the P25. In any event, it is therefore safe to assume that my comments here apply in most cases to the P20 as well as the P25, which was the back tested.

| If you are reading this then you probably know what a P25 back is. The title of this article is so un-snappy that you are unlikely to have stumbled this way without having at least a rough idea of what Phase One backs are all about. If you want to know some of the nuts and bolts details then the best thing to do is visit the Phase One site. |

| This won't be one of our usual diaries as we had the H1/Phase One P25 combination for only a few days and not the best weather for outdoor photography. In 2003 we had the chance to work with the Hasselblad H1 and a Kodak ProBack (now discontinued). The most important feature of any MF camera is the huge viewfinder. This is a big deal as the viewfinder is the interface to good composition and also checking the focus. Except for one short note we won't look into the H1 in more detail again but concentrate on a few aspects of the P25.

| I'm going to start with the conclusion first, so as not to keep you in suspense. The Phase One P25 22MP digital back is the finest instrument for recording photographic images that I have ever seen or used in 40 years as a photographer. I know them's fight' words, but possibly by the end of this report you'll understand why I'm making this bold statement. |
