Casio Exilim Pro EX-P600 Review

Review Summary
As the first of Casio's Exilim digital cameras to carry the Pro designation, the 6-megapixel, 4X-zooming Casio Exilim Pro EX-P600 faces stiff competition from an increasingly crowded field of prosumer models. Luckily, the P600 combines a mile-long list of features with an excellent user manual and built-in guidance system, making it an appealing option for enthusiasts and enthusiastic newcomers alike. The camera lacks a raw-capture mode, and its distracting live histogram takes some getting used to; in addition, the P600's 320x240 movie mode can't match the 640x480 resolutions offered on newer cameras. But the P600 offers solid image quality and very good battery life, which, combined with its versatility and accessibility, help to distinguish this model from its higher-resolution competitors.

| The Casio EX-P600 digital camera marks a significant turning point for Casio, a return to the "Enthusiast" market that they left after their very successful QV-3000 model had run its course. The QV-3000 was introduced in early 2000, so it's been a while since we've seen a full-featured "enthusiast" model from Casio. In contrast to the feature-rich consumer-oriented cameras they've focused on in the last few years, the Exilim EX-P600 offers a combination of features, capabilities, and image quality that is very clearly aimed at the serious photographer, rather than the casual snapshooter. How successful has Casio been in their goals for the P600? Read on for all the details, but the short answer is "very" - The EX-P600 is a very capable, flexible, and high-performing photographic tool.

| The Casio Exilim EX-P600's solid image quality, versatile lens, great LCD, pleasing design, and impressive menus outweigh such negatives as mediocre recycle time and slightly dark exposures; this pocketable winner is the best 6-megapixel point-and-shoot camera to come through our labs so far. |

| Although the new 6 megapixel EX-P600 carries the name Exilim, which is associated with Casio's very thin cameras, it is a bit more substantial in terms of its dimensions than others in that well-known series. Albeit thinner than some comparable cameras, the EX-P600's angular body is large enough to support 15 external controls, a 2 inch high-resolution LCD monitor and a large 4X zoom lens from Canon. In addition, aside from a couple of doors, all exterior surfaces are made of metal, imparting the EX-P600 with a solid, high-quality feel.
