Olympus C-765 Ultra Zoom Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.33 (out of 10)
The Olympus Camedia C-765 Ultra Zoom's size and deisgn belie its power. The smallest superzoom here, the C-765 is just about pocketable—if you have big pockets—but the boxy, plastic body feels cheap. Appearances aren't everything, however. This camera is comfortable to hold, a breeze to shoot, and produced the sharpest images in this roundup.

In most respects, the C-765 Ultra Zoom is very similar to the earlier C-750, C-740, and C-730 models that preceded it, except for a few tweaks and a new body style. It's about the same size and weight, and has the same zoom ratio and manual controls (such as adjustable AF area, long exposure times, and scene modes). The main difference between the past models is the 765's larger LCD and inclusion of a Li-ion battery pack instead of the 4 AA batteries previous models used. Continuing Olympus' stated intent of standardizing on the new xD-Picture Card memory format, the C-765 accepts only xD cards for image storage. The C-765 also carries forward the well-received "My Camera" menu, which lets users custom-configure a broad range of settings to meet specific needs, as well as the full range of exposure options.

The Olympus C-765 and C-770 Ultra Zooms are updated versions of 2003's popular C-740 and C-750 cameras. For 2004, they've received a sleeker body, the TruePic TURBO engine (for better performance and image quality), MPEG4 support (C-770 only), and PictBridge.

Taking into consideration that this camera has a 10x zoom range of 38 to 380mm, you would expect a bulky body and a long lens barrel. However, when you pick up the camera you will be surprised by how small and light this new Camedia is, in fact. It will not fit your shirt or trouser pocket without inconvenience, but a smallish purse or bag will comfortably store the Olympus C-765 with no problem at all. The front of the camera has a stylish, brushed light-metal finish that oozes durability and is pleasing to the eye as well. Thanks to a convenient handgrip the camera is easy to hold while your index finger automatically rests on the shutter release. This is the way all cameras should be laid out.

Olympus have long been innovators in the long-zoom category and have maintained a leading position there for some years now, bringing out new models at regular intervals. With the Olympus C-765 as their latest model it continues to offer very good value as a 4-megapixel digicam with a 10x zoom lens. It is certainly not the fastest camera around but it offers flexible exposure control with ample creative image adjustment tools and useful preset functions.
