Nikon D70 Digital SLR Review
|
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.60 (out of 10)
There are enough technical reviews of the D70 that I will not include any of that sort of information. What I want to try to do here is give you an idea what I went through in moving from my Nikon N90s to a D70. What I had to do in order to get the pictures I wanted out of the camera basically as a replacement for my N90s with Kodak Portra 160vc.

| In 1999 I promised myself I would switch to digital photography once a reasonable 4 Megapixel camera was available. Well the time has come, and Nikon has provided the answer in the form of the D70 Digital SLR. The fact that it is F mount compatible (mostly), produces excellent images, and is affordable have left me with no excuse for not jumping in at this point. The ultimate validation of this is the fact that my wife (who has always maintained a healthy dose of skepticism of my various equipment purchases) can't wait to get her hands on it, finally relinquishing her 20 year old Minolta SLR as the only tool a photographer needs. |

| With the exception of an occasional problem with moire, the Nikon D70 is the best camera you can buy for under $1300 (if you already have a few Nikon lenses, the price for the body-only kit is just $999). The D70 takes excellent pictures, though they are marred by moire patterns that show up way too often for a camera like this. There are many ways to try to get around it, and by all means: experiment! Photos are very sharp, with accurate color and exposure, and no purple fringing to speak of. |

| The D70, announced on 28th January 2004 is Nikon's answer to the new sub-$1,000 digital SLR market, its clear competition being the Canon EOS 300D (Digital Rebel) announced last August. The D70 is revealed by Nikon exactly two years since the D100, the D70 appears to share quite a lot with its sibling including a six megapixel CCD sensor and Multi-CAM900 auto focus system....

| Nikon wasn't the first to make a consumer-oriented digital SLR. Canon has its Digital Rebel, and it costs about $300 less. But unless you already have a bag of Canon lenses in your closet, the Nikon's a better value. It's far more rugged, a lot easier to use and takes better pictures. |

| When Canon dropped their $999 bombshell (the Digital Rebel) on the d-SLR market last year, a lot of people were wondering what Nikon would/could do to counter. Canon has a lot of experience making well-performing, yet very cheap film SLRs, and they have the further advantage of being vertically integrated, making the sensor and primary processing chip used in the Digital Rebel as well. Could/can Nikon compete? The D70 answers that question with a resounding "yes". I have no doubt that we'll see Canon drop the price on the Rebel by a fair bit, as the D70 gets out into the market, and Canon themselves begins to meet the runaway demand they've been struggling to keep up with. |

| The second AF digital SLR to break the under-$1000 price barrier, Nikon's D70 is a 6.1-megapixel model with a lot going for it besides the low price, including excellent performance, a top shutter speed of 1/8000, flash sync up to 1/500, simplicity for point-and-shooters, a full range of advanced features for serious photographers, and the ability to use a wide range of excellent AF-Nikkor lenses |

| First Look:A feeling of high quality dominates when we take the camera into our hands. Nikon has not been tempted to make concessions to the quality of the housing. A very neatly finished body with a clear hand grip, a metal mount and an easy accessible control panel at the back of the camera. The camera lies perfectly in the hand. Users of the traditional Nikon F100 camera will recognise certain details of the housing. The beginning photographer will get spoiled by experiencing this body that until recently was only available for the semi-professional or dyed-in-the-wool amateur photographer! |

| The second digital SLR to break the $1000 price barrier, the Nikon D70 costs $500 less than the Nikon D100 and employs the same autofocus module and a similar 6.1 megapixel CCD sensor. That has led some photographers to conclude that the D70 must be a "stripped down" model. In truth, the newer camera boasts an improved processor and buffer (temporary storage bank) and offers several other advantages. |

| The D70 is not just competition to the Canon DR, it's the team captain in an entirely different sport. Obviously Canon took the entry level market and delivered a great camera at a great price. But how great could things get if the price were just a tad higher? Nikon took aim at a slightly different demographic: everybody else.

| When the Canon EOS 300D was released in the final quarter of 2003, it caused quite a sensation. Here was an all-new digital SLR that coupled excellent image quality to an affordable price. Everyone agreed that the end of film based photography was near. Now, with the Nikon D70, standards have been raised again. The Nikon D70 is a terrific camera with excellent build quality that delivers near perfect images at a price that is superb value for money. |
