Nikon Coolpix 7900 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 5.14 (out of 10)
At $399.95, the Nikon Coolpix 7900 is built for the point-and-shooter with 16 scene modes, framing assists, and technology geared to fix red-eye in the camera and improve the lighting automatically. There is no manual mode, but there are still a few manual controls such as white balance. The movie mode offers three sizes with quick frame rates and the video quality looks pretty good – especially when used with the electronic vibration reduction.

The Nikon Coolpix 7900 is a stylishly designed 7 megapixel compact digital camera that was first announced at the PMA show back in February 2005. The Coolpix 7900 is one of the first Nikon digital cameras to feature some new technologies, including Face-Priority AF (Autofocus), which automatically detects a face in an image and focuses on it, D-Lighting, which intelligently lightens overly dark images, and Advanced Red-eye Reduction, which corrects red-eye in most situations. Other standout features on the Nikon Coolpix 7900 include a 2 inch LCD screen, 16 different scene modes to help you take better pictures and a long battery life of approximately 270 images. This is also one of the first Nikon digital cameras that I have reviewed, so did the Coolpix 7900 impress me with both its cutting-edge features and overall design? Carry on reading to find out.

Megapixel.net has posted their review of the new Nikon Coolpix 7900, a compact 7-megapixel digital camera with black and silver body. Megapixel writes "The Nikon Coolpix 7900 is bound to attract a fair bit of attention, if only for the fact that it is extremely compact and has a 7-megapixel resolution. Indeed, the small size of the Coolpix 7900, and the fact that it has a long-lasting battery, makes it one of those cameras that can be carried along at all times."

I normally start my reviews by describing my initial impressions of the camera, talking about build quality, control layout and handling, then move on to features and performance, and usually finish up with my opinion of the image quality. However, for this review of the new Nikon Coolpix 7900, I’m going to approach it a little differently. I want to talk about image quality right from the start, because frankly it’s made such a big impression on me.

The Nikon Coolpix 7900 is very easy to use and effortlessly captures well-exposed images with Point-and-Shoot simplicty. With 7.1MP resolution, an ED lens, and fast operation, the Nikon 7900 delivers very good image quality in a compact, attractive and solidly built body.

In its basic black attire, the 7-megapixel, 3X-optical-zoom Coolpix 7900 adds a touch of class to Nikon's compact digital camera line. In addition to a wealth of scene modes and a built-in help system, the Coolpix 7900 comes equipped with the latest technology designed to help snapshooters get the best pictures possible. The lack of aperture and shutter controls shouldn't deter enthusiasts, either; the Coolpix 7900 makes a great throw-in-your-pocket-and-take-it-anywhere camera. If 7 megapixels are more than you need, you may want to check out the less expensive Coolpix 5900, the 7900's silver, 5-megapixel twin.

With their 2005 Coolpix models, Nikon is going the route of so many other camera manufacturers by building flash memory into the camera instead of including a memory card. In the case of the Coolpix 5900 and 7900, that's just 13.5MB worth. That holds just 4 or 5 photos at the highest quality setting, so you'll definitely want to buy a memory card right away. The cameras use Secure Digital memory cards, and I recommend a 256MB or 512MB card as a good starting point. A high speed SD card is recommended if you plan on using the high quality movie mode.

Nikon has distilled most of the good bits from this camera's Coolpix predecessors creating an almost perfect point and shooter. Image stabilisation would be nice and some perfecting of the AF system would be even nicer, but otherwise the Coolpix 7900 is very accomplished, particularly when you realise you can make prints up to A3, at an output resolution of 200dpi, or even bigger if you know what you're doing thanks to its 7MP sensor.

While the 7MP Nikon Coolpix 7900 is a great compact camera, it isn't for everybody. Beginning and intermediate users will love the creative possibilities of the 7900's scene modes, but the compact camera lacks the manual settings that experienced shooters will want for more control.

The Nikon Coolpix 7900 is the latest in a long line of Coolpix digital cameras whose popularity stretches back to the original Coolpix 900, Nikon's first "breakthrough" digicam. The new Nikon 7900 is the latest in a line of user-friendly models that emphasize a wide range of Scene modes and special "assist" features to help novices bring back good photos from tricky shooting situations.

The Coolpix 7900 joins an increasingly crowded field of small, 'point and shoot' 7 megapixel cameras from most of the major players, and goes head-to-head with popular models such as Canon's SD500 and Sony's P150/P200. So does the latest Coolpix have what it takes to stand out in an increasingly competitive market?
