Fuji Film FinePix S5100 / S5500 Review

The Fujifilm FinePix S5100 is almost identical to last year's FinePix S5000, the main difference being that Fuji's proprietary 3.1-megapixel SuperCCD HR image sensor has been replaced with a conventional 4MP CCD. The result is a very fast shooter that takes very good pictures. If it had built-in antishake technology, it would be a serious contender for Editors' Choice among superzooms. As it is, if money's tight, this is a very good choice in the category.

| The Fuji FinePix S5100 is one of the latest in a long line of Fujifilm long-zoom digital cameras. Fujifilm produces a wide range of digicam models, from bare-bones entry-level models up to and including a high-end digital SLR. To my mind though, their greatest success has been in creating good-quality midrange cameras that sell at very competitive prices, and the new Fuji S5100 is another good example of that trend. A couple of years back, Fuji brought long-zoom digicams down to affordable price levels with their FinePix 2800 and 3800 models. Now, the Fuji S5100 advances the cause even further, with a 4.0 megapixel CCD, a 10x optical zoom lens, and a host of exposure features. While it still sports a super-easy fully automatic mode, the Fuji FinePix S5100 goes beyond basic "point & shoot" capability with Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, and Manual modes, as well as a few scene modes. The Fuji S5100 offers very long-zoom capability and greater exposure control at a surprisingly affordable price. |

| The FinePix S5100 ($399) is an updated version of Fuji's popular S5000 ultra zoom camera. The biggest change here is that Fuji has left the SuperCCD sensor behind in exchange for a traditional 4 Megapixel CCD. Other features on the S5100 include a 10X zoom lens, full manual controls, an AF-assist lamp, and support for conversion lenses. There are a ton of ultra zoom cameras on the market. | Fujifilm's FinePix S5100 (called S5500 in Europe) retains the design lines of the earlier S5000. The S5100 is equipped with a standard 4-megapixel CCD and a 10X optical zoom, and the external modifications between this model and the previous S5000 are minor. The fit and finish of the camera is impeccable and the camera's in-hand feel is broadly similar to that of a larger SLR type design. The body is made of a tough black plastic, and much of its surface is covered in a non-slip, textured, rubberized finish.

| It seems that digital compact cameras come in two basic body shapes. You have the rectangular block, bearing at least a superficial resemblance to a traditional compact film camera, and then you have what is called "SLR-style", which is usually denoted by a big chunky handgrip, a pop-up flash over the lens and a passing similarity to a high-end film SLR. Fujifilm has had a lot of success with this latter layout, adopting it for most of the higher specification models such as the S602 Zoom, the S7000, the S20 Pro, and this recent release, the S5500. |

| One of the first things that hit you removing the S5500 from its box is its size; it's very compact and its styling makes its handling extremely accomplished. Rubberised grips on its key handling surfaces - the right hand grip for example - make it great to hold.

| Announced in July 2004, the Fujifilm FinePix S5500 (sold as the S5100 in some territories) is an update to the S5000 offering the same 10x (37-370mm equiv.) optical zoom, SLR-like styling, comprehensive feature set and aggressive price point. The most significant change is the replacement of the rather controversial 'Super CCD' sensor used in the S5000 with a conventional 4 megapixel CCD offering an extra million effective pixels (the S5000's SCCD sensor used 3.1 million effective pixels to produce 6MP output images). Other welcome improvements include a better movie mode, manual (custom) white balance control and improved viewfinder/LCD screen coverage. |

| The Fujifilm FinePix S5500 Zoom is the successor to the 3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix S5000 Zoom that I reviewed back in June 2004. The Fujifilm S5500 looks very much like a traditional SLR camera in terms of styling, but it is actually more like a compact digital camera in size and weight. Despite its diminutive dimensions, the Fuji FinePix S5500 Zoom sports a massive 10x optical zoom which is equivalent to 37-370mm on a 35mm camera. The Fuji S5500 has a number of improvements when compared to its predecessor, including a 4 megapixel sensor, histogram playback, custom white balance control, 100% frame coverage and higher quality video mode. | The Fujifilm FinePix S5100 was announced in August 2004 and made its debut on the market at the retail price of $499. The successor to the FinePix S5000, the S5100 adds more megapixels on a different type of imaging processor and fifty bucks to the price tag. The digital camera touts 4.23 and 4 effective megapixels on its 1/2.7-inch CCD. The most prominent feature of this FinePix model is its Fujinon 10x optical zoom lens; equivalent to 37-370mm zoom range in 35mm format. The S5100 is an amalgamation of styles, offering the look of an SLR, control of an intermediate camera, and the weight of a compact camera. |
