Pentax Optio SV Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 6.78 (out of 10)
Pentax has pretty much reinvented itself over the past few years. There's no doubt that the company has invested a huge amount of time and resource into the design of its latest camera range, and you'd be hard pushed to find compact digital cameras that look more appealing than the latest Optios. I suspect that it's no coincidence that the Optio SV in my hand reminds me of the Canon Digital Ixus 500 that I reviewed last year, and if you place the two cameras next to each other, you'll see that they sport almost identical dimensions.

| At first glance, the Pentax Optio SV (street price around $360) looks like just another ultra-compact metal camera. And for the most part, that's just what it is -- with one exception. Unlike nearly all of the competition, the SV packs a powerful 5X zoom lens into its thin frame. So if you've wanted something resembling a pocket ultra zoom camera, this is it. The Optio also features a 5 Megapixel CCD, manual controls, 1.8" LCD display, and plenty of bells and whistles. How does it perform in our tests? Find out now! |

| A 5X optical zoom lens, excellent macro capabilities, and a burst mode that doesn't know when to quit differentiate the otherwise average Pentax Optio SV from the proliferation of 5-megapixel snapshot cameras. One of four 5-megapixel Optio models introduced by Pentax alone in the latter half of 2004, the SV is designed for the snapshooter who's content with letting the camera make all the decisions most of the time but who wants room to grow. However, discriminating shooters will find the poor performance and the mediocre photo quality enough to send them looking elsewhere. |

| The Optio X certainly has a unique appearance with a twistable body and the slimmest in the Optio series. With a stylish black and silver body, the Optio X is one of Pentax's latest feature-packed 5 megapixel digicams. The Optio X features a 3x optical zoom lens and 15 different recording modes as well as movie and voice memo functionality. In addition, the camera offers advanced functions such as manual white balance and 5 different bracketing options. |
