Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z3 Review

In Konica Minolta digital cameras, I generally prefer to work with the high-end A-series DiMAGE models because they’re loaded with all of the latest technology. But recently, the company released a Z-series model that’s every bit as desirable. The 4-megapixel DiMAGE Z3 incorporates a wealth of high-tech features that make it a fine choice for serious shooting. These include a newly developed 35-420mm (equivalent) optical zoom, the latest processor for great speed and image quality, a new Rapid Autofocus system and the Anti-Shake function that acts as an image stabilizer for sharper photos.

| The Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z3 may appear to be just another revision of the last Z camera, but in fact nothing could be farther from the truth. While it may have design traits from previous Z models, the Konica Minolta Z3 is a completely re-engineered camera that incorporates the anti-shake technology of the A-series cameras, and blends it with a new 12X GT optical zoom. |

| The DiMAGE Z3 ($549) is the first ultra zoom camera Konica Minolta to use their exclusive Anti-shake image stabilization system (unless you consider the A-series ultra zooms, which I do not). The Z3 also features a 12X optical zoom lens, which ties the Panasonic FZ15/20 for the most zoom of any digital camera. Other features include manual controls, a hot shoe, support for conversions lenses, a VGA movie mode, and more. The ultra zoom camera market is quite crowded these days. How does the Z3 compare? | If you're after a digital camera that will allow you to catch the action from afar, then the Z3 hopes to do just the job, but can a digital camera with built in optical lens really bring those far away objects up close? We took it down to the London Eye to see how much zoom we could get. |

| This month I was given the opportunity to test and play with the new Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z3 digital camera, successor to the DiMAGE Z2 model we reviewed earlier in 2004. I had a great experience with the Z2 model and the Z3 model doesn't disappoint me either. There have been some improvements made to the Z3 model both good and bad which I will touch on today. This camera hosts a number of features including a 4.2 megapixel CCD, 12X optical zoom and anti-shake support are just a few right off the bat. Let's take a more in-depth look at this model and see what makes it so different from the DiMAGE Z2. |

| With its big f/2.8 to f/4.5, 5.83-mm to 69.9-mm (35-mm to 420-mm, 35-mm equivalent) 12X optical zoom lens, antishake technology, futuristic looks, and nice handling characteristics, the 4-megapixel Konica Minolta DiMage Z3 provides good bang for the buck. Speed and image quality, however, don't quite equal those of the top performers. If money is a factor, we'd recommend the FujiFilm FinePix S5100; if you can pay a little more, consider one of our Editors' Choices in this class, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ15. |

| If you want the big 12X zoom and the terrific anti-shake feature of the Z3 but can't quite figure out why it has to come in a 4-megapixel package that, depending where you get it, costs more than the lesser DiMAGE Z20, the new DiMAGE Z5 is for you. It offers the same massive 12X optical zoom, has the anti-shape feature and all the other goodies of the Z3, but that's not all. It is a 5-megapixel camera and, perhaps even more importantly, it replaces the wimpy little 1.5-inch LCD of the Z3 with a higher resolution 2.0-inch display. The new and larger LCD makes a huge difference. You no longer have to squint to see what's on the screen. |

| Like its predecessors, the Konica Minolta Z3 offers a combination of ease of use, features, and retail price that are squarely aimed at the bulk of "point & shoot" users. At the same time though, the Z3 offers optional advanced exposure modes (including full-manual operation and a flash hot shoe) that appeal to more advanced users. As such, it makes a great camera for situations where users of widely varying experience levels need to share the same camera. It's also a great choice for novices who want a camera with features that they can "grow into" as their photographic abilities mature. The most important feature though, is its anti-shake technology. Long-zoom cameras are currently one of the most popular categories of digicams, but few people realize just how hard it is to hold a 10x zoom lens steady on a distant subject. |
