Olympus C470 / D590 Zoom Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.42 (out of 10)
The Olympus C-470 is a compact 4 megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical zoom lens and a decent 1.8" screen. The camera records unlimited length videos with sound. The camera is easy to use, and produces good images with good colour and detail. The camera has a fairly quick switch on time, but focusing time is fairly average, although better outside. For around £150 (UK) this easy to use camera offers good value for money, is quite stylish, fits easily into pockets, produces good images, and has an excellent super macro mode.

| Although it has not had the benefit of the worldwide advertising campaign given the Stylus Verve, Olympus has been marketing the D-590 Zoom concurrently, a camera that shares the Verve's ease of use but at a lower price. The D-590Z (C-470Z in Europe) has a smooth shape, making it easy to slip into a pocket. The body is two-tone plastic, front and back a textured silver colour separated by a shiny silver coloured band. |

| This is a nice, compact machine and one that brings 4-megapixels to the masses at a superb price. But the smoothing of detail by over processing means the larger prints made possible by the high resolution are not what they could have been, so the C-470 is good rather than great. |

| The Olympus D-590 Zoom ($299) is a compact point-and-shoot 4 Megapixel camera. The D-590Z is designed for people who want to pick up a camera and use it without worrying about complex settings. That means it has no manual controls of any kind, but Olympus figures that their target audience won't miss them. How does the D-590Z perform? Find out in our review!

| The Olympus D-590 Zoom is one of the latest Olympus digital cameras, in a line that's one of the broadest and oldest in the photo industry. The Olympus D-590 Zoom updates the previous D-580 model with an improved sliding lens cover design, smaller size (thanks the elimination of the optical viewfinder), and a few minor user interface tweaks as well. It offers a nice array of options, with eight preset Scene modes and the same white balance and exposure compensation adjustments. With an expected retail price of $299.99 (and "street" prices lower than that), the Olympus D-590 Zoom is a good basic digital camera at an attractive price. |
