Casio Exilim EX-P505 Review

The Casio Exilim EX-P505 represents a new class of camera that we call hybrids, which combine a full-fledged digital still camera and a digital camcorder. (Check out the preview of Sony's entry, the DSC-M1, and look for a review soon.) These cameras attempt to change the way we look at both kinds of devices. Though we've seen still cameras that can shoot video and camcorders that can shoot stills for quite some time, these new models are intended to be dual-function devices to a much greater extent. For instance, some still cameras can shoot video to the capacity of their memory cards, but a key characteristic of hybrids is the ability to zoom and refocus while shooting video, just like a camcorder, and most hybrids will also have a variety of special modes that take advantage of that they serve as both types of cameras. Although you might not want to get rid of your camcorder just yet, the EX-P505 hybrid can do both video and stills well, taking 5-megapixel photos and 640-by-480 MPEG-4 videos.

| Aiming for the hybrid market, the Casio Exilim Pro EX-P505 adds camcorder-like features to its digital camera body. The P505 has 5 effective megapixels for still imaging on its 1/2.5-inch CCD and full VGA resolution in its four movie modes. Heavily marketing the camera's video capabilities, Casio included a unique Past Movie mode that starts the recording five seconds before users press the shutter release button. The Casio P505 has a 5x optical zoom lens that works in the movie mode too. The camera body is compact, but the 2-inch LCD can fold outwards and rotate in classic camcorder style to provide added shooting flexibility. This Exilim hosts a fully manual mode, aperture and shutter priority modes, an auto mode, and a long list of scene modes. The hybrid Casio EX-P505 retails for $399.99. |

| The Casio Exilim EX-P505 ($499) isn't just another digital camera. Rather, it's Casio's attempt at making a convergence device, putting a camera and camcorder into one compact device. On the camera side there's a 5 Megapixel CCD, 5X optical zoom lens, rotating LCD display, manual controls, and plenty of scene modes. On the camcorder side you'll find a high quality VGA movie mode, a zoom lens that can be used during filming, and stereo sound recording.
The last device like this that I reviewed was the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-M1, and I wasn't thrilled with it. Has Casio done a better job? Find out now in our review! |

| The Casio Exilim Pro EX-P505 is one of the latest offerings from a company with a long history of innovation in the digital camera field. They promise the "Unexpected Extra" in their products, and the Casio EX-P505 lives up to that billing. It's quite compact, with a spy-like stealthy feel. While something of a novelty camera, the Casio Exilim EX-P505 is a great "bring along" camera with a large zoom for casual outings, business, or vacation trips. | The latest addition to Casio's expanding range of digital cameras is the Exilim Pro EX-P505. As a hybrid digicam it combines a 5-megapixel digital still camera with a video camera which is capable of shooting extended video scenes with high image quality. The camera features a 5x optical zoom lens (38-190mm eq.), a large 2inch swivelling TFT screen plus a whole host of automatic and manual functions. Thanks to the incorporation of MPEG4 technology, it also has the ability to capture full size - 640x480 - full motion video with stereo audio at 30 fps in VGA size, at three resolution sizes. Engineered for high image quality, high speed operation and low power consumption in an extremely compact body, this Casio EX-P505 looks certain to become a big success in today's busy digital market. |

| Looking at the pictures of the EX-P505, it's hard to get an idea of the size of it. The SLR-like design is reminiscent of large semi-pro models such as the Fujifilm FinePix S20 Pro or Nikon Coolpix 8800. The word "Pro" in the name also gives the impression that this is a big chunky camera, so it comes as a bit of a shock to discover upon opening the box that it is absolutely tiny. Measuring just 98.5mm wide and 55.5mm high, it can hide behind a large cigarette packet with room to spare. If you took a Fuji S20 Pro, scaled it down by about 20mm in every direction and reduced the weight by 285g, you'd have something the size of the EX-P505. |

| first discovered the Casio EX-P505 at the Photo Marketing Association show in Orlando, Florida, in February. After playing with it for a few minutes on the show floor, I realized this camera deserved deeper exploration. I've had one in my hands now for over a week, and I've found lots to discuss. I'll cover the highlights in this review. |

| It's a secret-don't tell anybody. Hybrid cameras aren't true hybrids. Photo cameras inevitably have poor camcorder capabilities, and camcorders inevitably have poor photo capabilities. You'd think it wouldn't be that difficult to combine the two functions, but apparently it is. However, Casio's Exilim Pro EX-P505 inches us closer to a device that's equally adept with both functions.

| When first encountering the Casio Exilim EX-P505, most people will be surprised at its size. While its shape is not one of those that allow the camera to be easily slipped into a pocket, the P505 fits comfortably on the palm of an open hand and yet offers a 5X optical zoom to match its 5-megapixel resolution. |
