Nikon Coolpix 8800 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.88 (out of 10)
The Nikon Coolpix 8800 camera is a logical step after the break-through forced by the introduction and availability of the first 8 Megapixel digital cameras in 2004. Nikon went from 5 to 8 Megapixels, a giant step if we look at the development which took place prior to this step. During the last Photokina in 2004, Nikon decided it was time to introduce the Coolpix 8800 to replace the top model pro-sumer Coolpix 8700 from that time. The new Coolpix 8800 is also an 8 Megapixel digital camera, equipped with a 10x optical zoom containing ED (Extra Low Dispersion) lens elements. Beside that we may also welcome the so-called Vibration Reduction and due to the large amount of settings and functions, the camera can easily compete with other 8 Megapixel prosumer cameras.

| At first glance, the Nikon Coolpix 8800 ($999) looks like the Coolpix 8700 from earlier this year but with a 10X zoom instead of 8X. That's true, but there's more to the story than that. The CP8800 is the first Nikon digital camera with VR (vibration reduction) technology -- the same image stabilization technology used on Nikon's 35mm lenses. Now you can take those telephoto shots without worrying about camera shake! |

| "This is a camera I've been waiting to get my hands on for quite a while. Announced over a year ago, it's still the Big Daddy of the Nikon CoolPix range. When I say big, what I actually mean is enormous. Nearly 15cm from front to back when powered up and weighing in at 680g including the battery, the 8800 is one seriously massive camera. It must be with a sense of humour that Nikon's corporate website lists it under 'Digital Compact Cameras'.
The CoolPix 8800 is an awesome camera for any enthusiast with deep enough pockets. Thanks to the big sensor and superb Nikkor ED lens its image quality is among the best available, while the exceptionally versatile exposure and AF systems provide plenty of creative controls and ensure accurate results under a wide range of circumstances. It's not without its problems, such as high-ISO noise and sluggish focusing, but it is one of the few a real alternatives to a digital SLR." |

| The new Nikon Coolpix 8800 is the latest in a long line of Nikon digital cameras that have helped define the state of the art in prosumer cameras from the early days of the digital revolution. With an 8-megapixel sensor, a 10x zoom lens with ED glass, Vibration Reduction, and the panoply of advanced features we've come to expect from the upper end of Nikon's digicam line, the Coolpix 8800 is poised to compete at the very top of the "prosumer" digital camera market. At the same time though, optional fully automatic operation and a rich collection of 12 "scene" modes make it easy for even rank amateurs to use. All in all, the new Nikon Coolpix 8800 is a powerful package of photographic technology. - Read on for all the details! |

| The Coolpix 8800 was announced along with the 8400 and 4800 on the 16th September in the run-up to Photokina 2004. It's the first ten times optical zoom eight megapixel digital camera and it's also Nikon's first consumer digital camera with Vibration Reduction technology. The 8800 takes the 8700's design and engine and builds on it, on top of the new lens and Vibration Reduction there are a whole raft of new features and improvements which are also shared by the Coolpix 8400 (the two cameras are virtually identical apart from their lens and body design). |

| We define superzooms as cameras with a 10x or greater zoom. We define the enthusiast models as the all-in-one cameras at the high end of the price scale that can create very large images and give the shooter a lot of control. Until recently, these two segments were very cleanly delineated. But not anymore, thanks to Nikon's 8-megapixel Coolpix 8800, an enthusiast camera with a superzoom lens. |

| The Coolpix 8800VR currently sits at the top of Nikon's pyramid of Coolpix digital cameras. Evolved from the Coolpix 8700, the Coolpix 8800 is equipped with a 10X optical, and an 8 megapixel resolution. Moreover, it is the first in the Coolpix line to offer an image stabilizer, a system Nikon calls Vibration Reduction - VR for short.

| Immediately noticeable is the vast 10x optical zoom, currently the largest on the market. Optics fans will note that the lens is made up of 16 elements, 2 of which are Nikon's ED molded glass, arranged in 10 groups. The zoom is equivalent to 35-350mm on a 35mm camera. Offering scalability, the lens can also have adapter rings added and either a 7mm fisheye or a 600mm telephoto converter attached. To make a lens of this size practical, Nikon have included, for the first time on a digital camera, a derivation of the pro-series lens vibration-reduction system. When activated this VR system detects, and automatically compensates, for movement in the CCD sensor. Heavy camera shake will need to be corrected by a tripod, but everything helps when at shooting at maximum focal length |
