Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.67 (out of 10)
The C-8080 Wide Zoom, to use its full name, is Olympus' bid to enter the 8 Megapixel crossover digital camera race. It features an Olympus 7.13 – 35.6mm f/2.4-f/3.5 zoom lens, which is the equivalent in 35mm terms to 28 – 140mm. The range is 5X. With a 28mm equivalent focal length at the wide end this is as wide as the current generation of digicams get, though I wonder at Olympus' use of "Wide Zoom" in its name, as just about every other camera in its class features this focal length. I'll have more to say on the lens, below.

The Camedia C-8080 is a new design for an Olympus C-series camera, and one that is likely to win over many users. The magnesium alloy body is finished in a flecked black paint, and covered on the front of the grip area, and around the lens barrel with textured black rubber.

On September 29th 2003 Olympus announced the five megapixel C-5060 Wide Zoom, as the name implies that camera was a step up from the C-5050 Zoom in no small measure because of its wide angle zoom lens. And now on the opening day of PMA 2004 Olympus raises the stakes higher, with their first eight megapixel prosumer level digital camera, the C-8080 Wide Zoom.

In case you haven't noticed, 8 Megapixel cameras are the latest and greatest thing in 2004. It seems like just about everyone has announced one! The C-8080 Wide Zoom ($999) is a totally new body style, finally breaking free of the body that's been with us since the C-2000Z. In addition to its 8 Megapixel CCD, the C-8080WZ offers a 5X optical zoom lens (that starts at 28mm), manual controls, a hot shoe, a flip-up LCD screen, VGA movie mode, and dual memory card slots (CF and xD). The new TruePic TURBO image processor promises improved image quality, as well as rapid startup, shutter release and playback speeds.

The Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom digital camera is the latest in a long line of Olympus Camedia models stretching back to the earliest days of the consumer digicam industry. Olympus is one of the truly dominant players in the digicam marketplace, with a current product line that ranges from bare-bones entry level models like the D-390 to their "from the ground up" all-digital SLR, the E-1.
