Olympus Stylus Mju mini / Verve Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 10.00 (out of 10)
Olympus proudly introduced a new stylish designed digital camera in September 2004. The Olympus Mju-mini Digital became true. Of course many camera manufacturers introduce new models mentioning the stylish design. However, the Mju-mini digital beats them all. The Olympus design department achieved a mayor break-through and the result is definitely worthwhile. This new camera recently became available on the Dutch market and the consumer can choose from various coloured housings.

The Olympus Stylus Verve is certainly one of the cooler-looking ultracompact digital cameras on the market today. And it's full of nice design touches, like a weather-resistant body, and a built-in lens cover that can't accidentally be pushed open. But unfortunately, the fact that it's available in six colors and will impress your style-conscious friends doesn't make up for its muddy, grainy pictures.

Behind the Stylus Verve's aesthetically sculpted, all-weather metal shell is a 1/2.5," 4.0 effective megapixel CCD sensor and TruePic TURBO image processor. The 2x optical, 4x digital zoom expresses its 35-70mm (equivalent) variable focal length lens, which retracts entirely into the camera body. Integrated into the design is a weather-resistant lens cover that slides laterally to shield the lens from external elements. There is a 1.8", 134,000 pixel high-contrast LCD on the back of the camera made for both viewing and composing images, as the Verve does no contain a viewfinder. Crafted as a point-and-shoot camera, the Stylus Verve contains 15 preset shooting modes for recording still images and a movie mode that will record QuickTime video with audio at 15 frames per second. These features attempt to add substance to the Stylus Verve and create an internal arrangement that parallels its flashy exterior.

Olympus unveiled the µ-mini Digital / Stylus Verve Digital at the Photokina trade show in Cologne (September 2004). The camera has soft rounded 'stylish' design, an all metal body with a color coordinated sliding cover over its two times optical zoom lens. The 'Stylus Verve' will is available in a range of colors. Specification wise it offers fairly basic fuss-free operation, 2x (35-70mm equiv.) zoom, four million pixels and a weatherproof design.

Here in North America at least, the arrival of the Olympus Stylus Verve has been heralded by an advertising blitz, in print and on television, the scope of which has rarely been seen before for a digital camera.....Just like other Stylus cameras the Stylus Verve is weatherproof, its buttons designed to resist moisture and its single side door equipped with a gasket so it too can resist moisture. However weatherproof should not be confused with waterproof. While a spray of water, or a bit of rain should not harm the Verve, it cannot be dunked in water, or be washed under a tap.

Presenting the Olympus Mju Mini Digital: on paper, a compact digital camera with 4 megapixels, 2x optical zoom lens that's equivalent to 35-70mm on a 35mm camera, 1.8 inch LCD monitor, all housed in a weather-proof metal body. So far, so run-of-the-mill. Lots of other digital cameras offer a similar if not better specification at the same pricepoint, so why should you consider the Olympus Mju Mini Digital? Take it out of the box and you soon see why - Olympus have designed one of the most stylish compact digicams on the market today. Your friends will definitely be impressed, but in the long-run will you? Carry on reading to discover the answer.

Beside its cool new look, the Verve also features a larger LCD display (and no optical viewfinder), redesigned menus, and improved performance over its predecessor (thanks to its TruePic TURBO processor). Just like the original Stylus camera, the Verve is also weather-resistant! Looks aren't everything, though; picture quality is much more important! Find out how the Verve performs in our review, which starts now!

The Stylus Verve has a shape that challenges the typical rectangles we're seeing from most companies, with a greater quality component build than we've seen from recent Stylus offerings. Best described as a bullet shape, even that doesn't well categorize the Verve. One is tempted at first to criticize Olympus for trying too hard, but when you actually hold the camera, you can begin to see the various purposes of the shape.
