HP Photosmart R607/507 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.18 (out of 10)
Another member of Hewlett-Packard's Photosmart R series, the R607 has an eye-catching design that uses a moulded metal cover on the front combined with a non-slip, graphite-coloured back. The HP R607 is an affordable and compact camera that provides a 4.1 megapixel resolution, a 3X optical zoom and is intended as an economical alternative to the Photosmart R707, the 5 megapixel model in this series.

Upon scanning the list of specifications and the number of seemingly impressive features of the HP Photosmart R607, I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical. My first thoughts were, "Hmm, all that for just under $230 ("you get what you pay for"), and so compact. But how does it really perform?" Well, as I navigated through the review, I discovered more than just a couple of pleasing elements that the R607 possesses. One of its features that really impressed me is HP's Image Advice. This feature, when accessed in the playback mode, gives an analysis of an image by identifying the problem (i.e., focus, exposure, etc.), the cause of the problem, and recommended solutions for images taken in the future - literally, a hands-on tutorial, right at your fingertips. I also loved the in-camera red-eye removal feature - no more wasted photo ops or laboring in the digital darkroom to correct those glowing red eyes. As well, the Panorama preview mode is also another nice feature - it actually "stitches" a series of photos together to create a panoramic scene - and shows you a preview immediately on the LCD screen. The R607 also has the ability to add a sound clip to a still photo as well as capture short movie clips with sound. The score was increasing. Read on to find out more!

The HP Photosmart R507 (known as the R607 in the US) is a compact 4 megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 35mm -105mm on a 35mm camera). It has a 1.5" Colour TFT screen. The camera comes with 32mb memory built into the camera, and can be upgraded with an additional SD card. The camera takes a proprietary Lithium-Ion battery. The camera also records unlimited 320x240 videos at 24fps with sound.

"The HP Photosmart R607 is a competent enough entry in the 4-megapixel compact camera arena, with acceptable image quality, a speedy burst mode, and a 3X Pentax zoom lens. It's seasoned with enough quirky features to please the most gizmo-crazy budding photographer.

Image quality was good for a 4-megapixel camera for smaller enlargements, but even the Best image-quality setting uses enough JPEG compression to produce plentiful artifacts that were clearly visible in blowups."
