Nikon Coolpix 8400 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.75 (out of 10)
The eight megapixel wide angle zoom Coolpix 8400 was announced along with the Coolpix 8800 and Coolpix 4800 on 16th September in the run-up to Photokina 2004. By it's name it's clear that the Coolpix 8400 is intended as the direct successor to the 2003 five megapixel Coolpix 5400 which also featured a wide angle zoom lens, although not as wide as the 8400's impressive 24 mm equiv. On paper then the 8400 appears to be a highly capable eight megapixel prosumer digital camera with a new (and unique) 24 - 85 mm equiv. (3.5x) zoom lens. It's probably worth noting that other than the body design and lens system the 8400 and 8800 are virtually identical in specification and features.

A blend of design elements originating in the Coolpix 5400 with others from the recent Coolpix 8800, the Coolpix 8400 is instantly identifiable as a member of the Nikon family. While the Coolpix 8400 shares the 8-megapixel resolution of the Coolpix 8800, it differs in its optics. Unlike the Coolpix 800 which has a stabilized 10X zoom, the Coolpix 8400 is equipped with a shorter 3.5X ED glass zoom that a wide angle (equivalent to a 24mm).

The new Nikon Coolpix 8400 is the latest in a long line of Nikon digital cameras that have helped define the state of the art in prosumer cameras from the early days of the digital revolution. With an 8-megapixel sensor, a 3.5x zoom lens with ED glass, and the panoply of advanced features we've come to expect from the upper end of Nikon's digicam line, the Coolpix 8400 is designed to compete at the middle of the "prosumer" digital camera market. At the same time though, optional fully automatic operation and a rich collection of 12 "scene" modes make it easy for even rank amateurs to use. All in all, the new Nikon Coolpix 8400 is going to be most appealing for the new possibilities offered by its ground-breaking 24mm equivalent wide angle lens. - Read on for all the details!

When the Nikon Coolpix 8400 was released, it became the widest lens SLR-like digicam on the market. It offers an eight megapixel output resolution with a full array of exposure modes from full auto to manual. It has a twist and flip LCD monitor design and a high resolution electronic viewfinder. The 8400 is packed with features such as 15 preset Scene modes, BSS (Best Shot Selector), Ultra HS shooting mode, and much more. In our review, we discovered that it offers a good amount to its users. It is capable of producing high quality images with exceptional color reproduction. The 8400 can record JPEG images with low compression that are free from JPEG artifacts. In addition, it offers TIFF and RAW recording options. In our review, we found that there are several strengths and weaknesses in regard to image quality. Read on for a full review of this feature-packed, wide angle digicam.

The Nikon Coolpix 8400 is a digital camera with a rather unique selling point. The Nikon 8400 has a 24mm wide-angle lens, which is currently the widest focal length available on any compact digital camera. This does come at the expense of a shorter telephoto focal length, which is equivalent to 85mm, but that is still fine for portrait shots. Other standout features on the Nikon 8400 include an 8 megapixel sensor with support for RAW, TIFF and JPEG formats, full creative control over exposure in the form of aperture-priority, shutter-priority and manual modes, plus a hotshoe that accepts a Nikon Speedlight flashgun. The Nikon Coolpix 8400 is aimed firmly at the serious prosumer, but can it compete in a market where DSLR cameras are quickly becoming more affordable? Read my review to find out.

We've seen plenty of cameras with long lenses that let you bring the action up close, but almost none with lenses that are wide enough to capture a broad scene without an inordinate amount of backing up on foot: Until now, that is. The 8-megapixel Nikon Coolpix 8400 has the widest-angle lens we've seen on a digital camera, and it takes impressive pictures to boot.

Take a lot of indoor shots? Frustrated by lenses that start at 35mm or above? Sure, there are a couple of cameras that are 28mm, but if you wanted to go wider you needed to attach a clunky conversion lens. Not anymore! The Nikon Coolpix 8400 ($899) is the first fixed-lens camera with a 24mm lens. The zoom numbers are unusual too -- it's 3.5X -- with a focal length of 24 - 85 mm. If 24-85 sounds familiar, that's because it's a pretty typical range for a starter lens on a digital SLR. There's more to this camera than just the lens, though. It also features an 8 Megapixel CCD, rotating LCD display, full manual controls, VGA movie mode, hot shoe, and more. I'll explain all that stuff in more detail in our preview, which starts right now.
