Pentax Optio S5i Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 10.00 (out of 10)
Announced in August 2004, the Pentax Optio S5i is an upgrade of the popular S4i with an extra million pixels, some minor styling changes and a couple of new features. The S5i is almost unfeasibly small - thanks in part to the innovative sliding lens first seen at the start of 2003 in the Optio S (and since in several Pentax and Casio models) - yet is more feature-packed than most other ultra-compacts. In an ever-growing market, and with a handful of outstanding competing models (see recent reviews of the Canon PowerShot SD300 and Panasonic DMC-FX7 for example), does the Optio S5i have what it takes to become the pocket camera of choice? Let's find out.

Although definitely targeting snapshooters who are looking for an ultracompact and stylish camera, the Optio S5i also offers enough features to please those who will want to tweak their photos as their skills grow. Pentax couples an array of fun features with the image quality you'd expect from a 5-megapixel shooter. The chief drawbacks are a sluggish burst mode (it measures in seconds per frame rather than frames per second at full resolution), a smallish optical viewfinder that made composing images difficult, and diminutive controls that might prove awkward for those with large hands.

The Pentax Optio S5i is the latest in a series of ultra-compact digital cameras that arguably offer more features per cubic inch than any other digicam line on the planet. The Pentax Optio S5i is a stylish, compact, feature-packed digital camera that updates last year's Optio S4i. Sporting a 5.0 megapixel CCD, the Pentax S5i literally fits inside an empty Altoids tin, giving Pentax a competitive edge in the portable digicam market. Pentax has also given the Optio S5i increased white balance options for improved color balance, while maintaining the same excellent exposure options offered on the previous model. Read on for more details, this cool little design just got better.
