Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1 Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.50 (out of 10)
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1 ($550) is an ultra-compact camera with a 3X zoom lens, 5 Megapixel CCD, and large 2.5" LCD display. It has many of the bells and whistles found on Sony's higher end cameras, but it's still a (rather pricey) point-and-shoot camera. It's also one of only two Sony models to use the tiny Memory Stick Duo cards -- which are roughly the size of a Secure Digital (SD) card.

My first impression is that the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1 digital camera is a solid piece of technology. In all respects, one expects a Sony product to be solid, functional, well-designed, and a pleasing product to carry around with you to shoot photos. Sony has a long-standing reputation for quality consumer electronics, and that is one of the reasons why I was interested in reviewing this tiny camera.

The T1 is superbly slimline, with an excellent quality of construction. Just slide the lens cover downwards to switch it on, look at the LCD to compose your shot, and that’s essentially all you have to know. If you do need to tweak any of the settings, you'll find the menu system clear and straightforward, displaying the menus at the bottom of the screen. When you highlight a menu with the navigational buttons, it opens upwards, enabling you to make your selection. The larger text obscures a bit more of the image, but it's hardly a major flaw.

The Sony T1 is an admirable little camera. This image size and quality from a credit card-sized digital camera was undreamed of just a few years ago. Is the T1 better than others in its price and size class? I have no idea. But at the rate of change happening in digicams at the moment any lead that it might have will likely be short-lived. In the meantime this is a very sweet little camera that any serious photographer would be pleased to own and shoot with.

I was very excited when Photobird.com asked me to review the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1 digital camera. I've seen the television commercials for the camera featuring Steven Tyler from Aerosmith and I'm really into cool, tiny electronics -- especially digital cameras! I'm not a photographer, but I love to take pictures and the camera looked easy to use, easy to hold, and small enough to fit in my hand bag.

People can't resist picking up the sexy little T1 - and are often surprised at the substantial feel of the stainless-steel body casing. The front plate slides downward to uncover the lens and power up the camera, which takes a little more than a second.

If you live by the philosophy that you can't be too rich or too thin, the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T1 belongs in the pocket of your Armani suit. This ultrachic, thin, high-resolution snapshot camera boasts a large 2.5-inch LCD, unusually good video capabilities, and a Carl Zeiss 3X zoom lens. But despite the T1's cool factor, enthusiasts won't be satisfied with its minimal advanced controls, and persnickety shooters will look down their noses at its image quality.
