HP Photosmart M407 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.58 (out of 10)
The HP Photosmart M407 is an average kind of camera at an average kind of price. It is ideally suited to complete beginners to photography, as HP have put a tremendous amount of effort into making it simple to understand and operate. The great help system, accessible external controls and simple, uncluttered menu system all combine to make the M407 one of the most approachable digicams available. On the other hand, many key areas fail to impress.

In late August 2004, Hewlett-Packard Company announced their new range of digital cameras, the Photosmart M-series and R-series, with the M-series being the less expensive of the two. Cameratown was given a model from each of these series to review, the M407 and R607, and recently posted our evaluation of the latter to this website. The HP Photosmart M407 is a 4.1-megapixel camera with a total 18x zoom lens (3x optical, 6x digital), TTL auto focus with normal and macro ranges, integrated flash, and a 1.8-inch color LCD screen. The M407 comes with 16 megabytes of internal flash memory and a memory expansion slot for optional SD/MMC cards (ability to support memory cards up to 1GB.) Featuring seven shooting modes, the M407 also allows you to: Organize, edit, store, and protect your photos and video clips with HP's exclusive Image Zone software; E-mail photos without large attachments with HP Instant Share™ technology; Print still shots by connecting to any PictBridge-compatible printer; Capture the action using the short video-clip feature; Add audio clips to still shots; Choose ISO speeds of up to 400 or auto; Adjust white balance from one of five settings; Capture images in one of three color selections, full-color, sepia, or black & white; and Shoot photos in quick succession with burst mode. With a price of $199.95, the Hewlett-Packard Photosmart M407 is priced competitively with other 4-megapixel cameras. How does it perform? Read my review to find out!
