Sony Cyber-shot DSC-F828 Review

The fourth generation of Sony's Cyber Shot F series, the DSC-F828 is also the most sophisticated digital still camera the company has produced to date. Its impressive spec sheet includes an 8-megapixel CCD, a swiveling 7X zoom lens, and a new RGBE filter system that Sony developed to improve color range and accuracy. With great ergonomics, a feature set made for all but the most advanced amateur photographers, and performance that lets it pull ahead of many of its competitors, this model makes a strong first impression. But a closer look reveals a few flaws that you should know about before you fall for the distinctively designed DSC-F828.

| Just when everyone was getting comfortable with 5 Megapixel cameras, Sony has made a huge jump -- releasing the first consumer-level camera with an 8 Megapixel CCD -- the Cyber-shot DSC-F828 ($999). This CCD isn't special just for the resolution, though. It's also the first camera to use a new 4-color filter. This new filter adds an "emerald" filter to the RGB filters normally found in a CCD. Sony says this will produce photos with much more accurate color. |

| If you're looking for a feature packed, high-resolution, 8 megapixel digital camera with a huge, high-quality lens that makes people say "darn, he really looks like he knows what he's doing," then the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-F828 might just be the digital camera for you.

| The F828 is a large camera, bigger than its predecessors, and more elaborate. However, the design concepts behind the F828 remain true to the earlier versions. The body is still articulated, allowing the lens to point up to 70°, or down to 30°.
The exterior of the F828 is composed of metal and polycarbonate parts, such as the flash housing, making it solid while controlling the overall weight of the camera. When ready to shoot, the weight remains reasonably light at 955 grams (2.1 lb). |

| The Cybershot DSC-F828 was announced on 15th August, this new camera is very obviously a development of the DSC-F717 design. Just under a year since the F717 and Sony's flagship prosumer digital camera has certainly undergone a large number of changes, not least of which is the switch from the electronically zoomed five times lens of the F707/F717 to an all new mechanical zoom seven times lens with Carl Zeiss T* coating and a wide angle 28 mm equiv. capability.......... |

| In mid-August, 2003 Sony announced the DSC-F828. It captured the imagination of many photographers, myself included. Initially promised for November, it began to ship in mid-December, and I received one for testing at that time. This is possibly one of the most eagerly anticipated digital cameras in some time — and because of the 5 month time lag from announcement to shipment I do mean some time.
Sony shot itself in the foot by not providing web reviewers with production samples before cameras arrived in consumer's hands. This has meant that well meaning but uninformed amateurs have been almost hysterical in their on-line discussions about their newly delivered cameras, citing all sorts of concerns. This would not have happened in Sony had simply FedExed a dozen cameras from the first production run to the leading online review sites. This would have meant that knowledgeable reviews and properly produced and processed sample images would have been available around the time that cameras reached early buyer's hands, and much of the sillyness would have been avoided.

| The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-F828 was the first 8MP camera out of the gate last autumn, and it's the only one to use a four-color version of the Sony CCD. But the early version we tested ("Digital Photography for Everyone," March 16, page 72) didn't fare well on image-quality tests. Sony has since upgraded its firmware (available as a free download), so we gave it another look. Not only have sharpness and resolution dramatically improved, but the DSC-F828 has proved to be the easiest 8MP camera to operate.
