The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-V3 was introduced just before the world's greatest event on the field of photography kicked off, the Photokina show. This new model is the topmodel of the assortment of Sony's digital cameras. It's a typical example of a brand like Sony and it represents the way Sony approaches digital cameras that compete for the label of 'perfect prosumer digital camera.' The camera has its personal characteristical design and is equipped with all sorts of creative settings.

| The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-V3 ($699) is a total redesign of the popular DSC-V1, a camera which I wasn't overly enthusiastic about. I have no idea what happened to the DSC-V2 -- probably the same thing that happened to the PowerShot G4.....The V3 retains many of the nice features of its predecessor, including a 4X zoom lens, full suite of manual controls, hot shoe, laser focusing system, and more. It seems that full-featured 7 Megapixel cameras will be all the rage this holiday season. People who aren't quite ready for a digital SLR but don't want the image quality issues of an 8 Megapixel camera may find cameras like the V3 to be the best choice. How does the V3 perform? | Announced in early September 2004, the Sony DSC-V3 is the latest embodiment of that company's vision for an "ultimate" digital rangefinder-style camera. Sony Electronics Inc. has long held a dominant position in the digicam marketplace, delivering a wide range of models that enjoy enormous popularity with consumers. Currently, they offer what's arguably the broadest line of digicams in the industry, with multiple models in several distinct product lines (the only thing lacking is an interchangeable-lens SLR). |

| The seven megapixel four times zoom DSC-V3 was announced on 30th August 2004. It's the first 'prosumer' level compact digital camera from Sony since 24th February 2003 when they announced the five megapixel four times zoom DSC-V1. Despite carrying the V nomenclature and in fact having the same lens as the DSC-V1 the V3 is quite a different beast. It's larger and heavier, has a more comfortable deep rubber hand grip, a better control layout and a huge 2.5" LCD monitor. In fact it's more like a follow-up to 2001's four megapixel DSC-S85 (and there were plenty who loved that camera). |

| The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-V3 is housed in a completely new design. It offers a 7.2 megapixel resolution, a 4X Carl Zeiss optical zoom, and a 2.5 inch LCD monitor. The V3 body is composed of plastic and metal with a black, lightly textured satin finish, and a large rubber-covered grip provides a comfortable hold on the camera. Overall, this is a camera that has a size and weight that place it in the category of the larger compact digitals. |

| Holding the DSC-V3 for the first time felt very comfortable, almost as if I have used it before. Since my main camera is a Digital SLR, I think it's the large grip and balance that I liked. I also liked the fact that the majority of controls I would use on a daily basis were accessible using buttons on the back of the camera body, instead of having to go deep into menus. Sony has also placed these control right where they should be; The scroll wheel for adjusting aperture, shutter, and exposure is conveniently placed above the zoom rocker and is easily controlled with your thumb, as is the flash on/off, macro, review, self-timer, and delete buttons. I also loved the the large 2.5-inch LCD display, which seemed like a jumbotron compared to the paltry 1.8-inch screen on my EOS-10D. I definitely love the camera so far, but how will I feel when I am done reviewing it? Read the review to find out. |
