Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.20 (out of 10)
Firstly, the 1Ds Mark II is not like your everyday D-SLR when it comes to price; it retails for U.S. $8,000. Secondly, it's about as full-featured a camera as anyone has every marketed. Thirdly, if you're ever charged by a Rhino, use the 1Ds Mark II to smack him on the head. The Rhino will likely be stunned, while the 1Ds Mark II won't be. I know of 1 Series cameras that have fallen onto concrete from a height of 6 feet, been submerged fully under water for as long as 15 seconds, and which have been used from 120F in the desert to -35F in the Arctic, and emerged unscathed. Not to say that there likely aren't equally robust cameras from other makers, or conversely, cameras that were damaged by simply tumbling off the couch onto a thick carpet. But in the main the Canon 1D Series can take whatever most photographers can hand out, and keep on ticking.

The EOS-1Ds was the first digital SLR released with a full frame 35 mm size sensor and the first digital SLR with double-digit megapixel count. Two years later and the new EOS-1Ds Mark II raises the megapixel count by 5.6 million pixels, which equates to a 23% increase in horizontal and vertical pixel count. It shows too, the EOS-1Ds Mark II delivers a level of detail unmatched by any other current digital SLR (excluding the more 'exotic' medium format backs). The 1Ds Mark II also demonstrates a level of per-pixel sharpness which is often so difficult to achieve with Bayer pattern sensors.

Three years down the line and this is the first camera review that photo-i is publishing. Regular readers will be aware by now that I put hardware through real life tests and avoid using too much techno talk. The Canon EOS 1Ds Mk II is a top of the range camera, not just for Canon but for the entire digital camera market. Due to the high price tag this camera may perhaps appeal more to professionals than the average home user, I will bend my rules slightly and include more technical information. I will also look at image quality and how the camera performs on a pro shoot.

Sixteen point six megapixels of effective resolution is really nice. Of course, the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II costs about the same per megapixel as the Canon EOS 1D Mark II - 2x as much money. After spending a sum of money approaching 5 figures and waiting 3 months to get the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II, I had high expectations. And I am not disappointed. I have found no unexpected surprises - do not expect to find any - and should not find any for what this tool costs.

Canon maintains its industry-leading position with the 16.7-megapixel EOS 1Ds Mark II, the highest-resolution small-format digital SLR. Intended for studio and landscape photographers who prefer the size and flexibility of 35mm-style cameras, the 1Ds Mark II sets a new benchmark for performance and image quality. With a wealth of upgrades, this camera succeeds and surpasses Canon's original EOS 1Ds, introduced two years earlier.
