Canon Powershot SD300 / IXUS 40 Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.17 (out of 10)
The Canon PowerShot SD300 Digital ELPH swept onto the scene just in time for the 2004 Holiday season along with its "little brother," the SD200. Together they replace the SD110 in Canon's popular, diminutive digital camera line. In both the film and digital worlds, the tiny, high-style Canon ELPH models have been wildly popular.

| The PowerShot SD300 Digital ELPH ($400) is a totally new design in Canon's line of compact point-and-shoot cameras. The SD300 takes everything that made the S400 and S410 great and makes them smaller - except for the LCD, which got a lot bigger. Other new features include a 4 Megapixel CCD, great VGA movie mode, an AF-assist lamp, and a couple of manual of controls. The SD300 has a younger sibling, the SD200 ($300), which has a 3.2 Megapixel CCD and (in my opinion) a nicer-looking front panel. The old Digital ELPHs were my favorite point-and-shoot cameras - how does this all new, ultra-thin model compare? Find out now!

| Announced at the end of September 2004, the SD300 (which goes by the names of Digital Ixus 40 in Europe and IXY DIGITAL 50 in Japan) is the latest in a long line of ultra-compact 'ELPH' or 'IXUS' cameras stretching back to early 2000 (and a lot farther back than that in the film camera world). The SD300 (along with little sister the 3MP SD200) is the smallest, slimmest and most powerful ELPH yet, and features several key improvements over the previous generation. The SD300 and SD200 are the first cameras to incorporate two UA (Ultra-high Refractive Index Glass Molded (GMo) Aspherical lens) elements which has allowed Canon to produced its smallest cameras to feature a 3x zoom. It may be smaller than a credit card, but Canon has still managed to cram a fairly comprehensive range of features into the SD300. |

| The Canon PowerShot SD300 Digital Elph is only a 4MP camera with a 2 inch LCD in an ultracompact space increasingly dominated by 5MP contenders with 2.5 inch LCDs—but that's okay, because this tough, tiny camera punches well above its weight. Superb picture quality more than make up for its sluggish flash recycle times, making this our new Editors' Choice ultracompact camera. |

| Sleek, thin, smooth, and featuring a comparatively large 2-inch LCD monitor and an optical viewfinder, the PowerShot SD300/IXUS 40 offers a slimmer design than most other Digital Elph/Ixus cameras to date. The SD300, a 4 megapixel model and probably the thinnest digital camera produced by Canon so far, packs a 3X optical zoom and yet has a thickness of 20.7mm (0.82 inch) when the lens is retracted. Completely metal clad, the SD300 is composed of a mix of textures and chrome finishes that gives it a classy appearance.

| The Canon IXUS 40 represents a "breakthrough in lens technology" according to Canon. It features an all-new lens technology that helped to ensure the camera is kept extremely small yet retains good optical quality. Its all-metal body is certainly small, it’s 20.7mm thin and weighs a sprightly 130g. The IXUS 40 is now Canon’s smallest digital compact with a 3x zoom lens 4 megapixels and a lens that provides a 35-105mm (35mm equiv) focal range and fast, F2.8 to F4.9, maximum aperture settings.
