On August the 19th of this year Canon announced a new flagship addition to its successful 'S' range, the 7 megapixel PowerShot S70. Aside from the black paint job and new sensor the S70 is identical to the PowerShot S60 (reviewed August 2004), sharing that model's new slim body design, wideangle lens and improved movie mode. | Canon currently has a second 7.1MP camera in its stable, the compact PowerShot S70. In our labs, both the S70 and the PowerShot G6 produced very good results, and both are Editors' Choices. Deciding which one is right for you is a matter of deciding which class suits you better and which you can afford. |

| I've bought many Canon digital cameras... maybe too many. Although I have been moving towards dSLR cameras as of late, there are many advantages to a point-and-shoot digital camera. Point-and-shoot cameras are much smaller, more integrated solutions that also offer excellent ease of use with minimal loss of image quality. The Canon Powershot S70 is a mid-end to high-end point-and-shoot digital camera that allows flexibility and creativity with few faults and still provides excellent image quality. |

| The Canon PowerShot S70 is a minor update of this year's previous wide angle powerhouse, the S60. At the top of Canon's "mid-sized compact" line, the sleek S70 leverages its wide-angle zoom lens (reaching down to 28mm equivalent focal length at its widest zoom setting) by adding a 7.1 megapixel imager to an already superbly crafted camera. Hidden within the PowerShot S70's trim case is a new level of optical sophistication, thanks to Canon's advanced molding process that permits aspheric lens elements to be (reliably) crafted from high-index optical glass for the first time. The result is a zoom lens that's capable of very wide angle operation, in a very compact form factor, yet with lower levels of distortion than was formerly possible. |

| Though it fails to garner the same across-the-board high marks as its predecessors, the Canon PowerShot S70 nevertheless acquits itself very well as an enthusiast's compact. A 7-megapixel camera with a 3.6X zoom lens, the S70's first-rate photos and flexible feature set appeal now as much as they ever did. Only poor battery life and average performance hold it back from attaining better grades.

| The Canon PowerShot S70 ($599) is a 7 Megapixel version of the PowerShot S60 (see our review) that was released earlier this year. The S60 and S70 are virtually identical, with the S70 having a 7.1 Megapixel CCD (versus 5.0 on the S60), a slightly slower burst mode, and a different-colored body. | Initial contact with this camera is impressive. Its stylish black exterior and traditional camera design will appeal to many. It feels nice and solid, even weighted, and robust enough to handle a few bumps during its lifetime. Turning the S70 on and off is a simple matter of a sliding cover over the lens, which also serves to protect the glass. As with all Canon cameras I've used, the buttons and menus are very simple to use, with anyone being able to pick this camera up and operate it confidently after a matter of minutes. |

| Although it is dressed in black, the body of the new Canon PowerShot S70 is exactly the same as that of the silver S60 we reviewed recently. However, there is one critical difference: the S70 is equipped with a 7 megapixel CCD, which delivers a large 3072 x 2304 pixel image. |
