Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W1 Review

Review Summary
There's a lot to like about the compact Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W1: It's well-designed, with a beautiful, bright 2.5-inch LCD; it has a good button layout and simple menus; and it offers high-end features. Unfortunately, the camera's one real weakness was in the sharpness of its images, which keep it from being an Editors' Choice. If you're looking for a Sony camera, you'd do better to pick up the 5.1-megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-P100, which delivers crisp pictures for about the same price.

The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W1 is available on the Dutch market since a few months now. During the last PMA show in Las Vegas, reviewed by LetsGoDigital, this new model was introduced, among others. The Cyber-Shot DSC-W1 should also appeal to the more traditional photographer because of the presence of a high quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens and its beautifully finished compact aluminum housing.....

The Sony DSC-W1 is an interesting camera. It combines features found on other Sony cameras into a single new package. The Program mode makes it a high quality point and shoot, the Manual mode allows the user to experiment and get comfortable with long exposures and the effects of aperture and shutter speed. This, combined with a large LCD monitor, a sharp lens and a high image quality should make the DSC-W1 quite popular.

Functionally, the Sony DSC-W1 is nearly a dead ringer for the slightly more compact DSC-P100, offering nearly the same functions in a differently-shaped and slightly larger body, with a larger 2.5 inch LCD. It competes with models like Canon's PowerShot S500 in the "subcompact" digicam category, and should be a strong player there, with its excellent mix of features, functions, small size, and image quality.

The Cyber-shot DSC-W1 is sculpted by Sony with less stylistic vigor then many other Cyber-shot models, as its boxy form and 35mm point and shoot design suggests a greater concern for pragmatic application and functionality. Offering a 1/1.8", 5.1 megapixel CCD sensor with a RGB primary color filter applied to it, the DSC-W1 is built for performance. The W1 has several design subtleties aimed towards improved handling and ease of use. Intended as an advanced point and shoot camera with simplistic control and portability ease, the W1 will appeal to a broad audience including beginners, travelers and those looking to grow into manual control.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W1 ($399) is an ultra-compact 5 Megapixel camera with a big 2.5" LCD, VGA movie mode, and robust performance. It comes in both silver and black bodies.
