Fuji Film FinePix E550 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.44 (out of 10)
The Fuji FinePix E550 is one of the latest digital cameras made by Fujifilm, and arguably one of their best to date. Based on a fourth-generation Super CCD HR chip design, the Fuji E550 offers great resolution for an attractively-priced consumer digital camera, with a 6.3 megapixel image sensor, whose output is interpolated into a 12.3 million megapixel image. With a sharp 3x zoom lens, compact size, and straightforward user interface, the Fuji E550 is an excellent all-around point & shoot model that should appeal to novice users and more experienced shooters alike. The FinePix E550 Zoom was announced at the end of July 2004. The E550 is essentially the same camera as the FinePix F810 (see note below) in a less expensive plastic body, and without the widescreen LCD or 16:9 shooting mode, AA batteries instead of a Li-Ion pack and USB 1.1 rather than 2.0. The E550's sensor is the fourth generation of the now well-established Super CCD technology, offering 12.3MP output from 6.3 million effective pixels. Like the F810 the new camera offers a 4x optical zoom (32.5-130mm equiv.), fast operation and a fairly comprehensive array of manual controls in a compact, traditionally-styled body.

As long as you stick with the 6 Megapixel resolution, the Fuji FinePix E550 is a good choice for those who want a very responsive camera with good photo quality and manual controls. The resolution issue is an important one, as the E550 uses the unique SuperCCD HR sensor. While it can produce images with 12 million pixels, you'll get the best results by shooting at the 6M mode, or even better, by downsizing from the 12M/Fine mode.

The Fujifilm FinePix E550 retails for around US$399.95, but you can find one for as little as US$287.95 if you search online. At this price, the incredibly large 1/1.7 inch, 6.0 megapixel CCD and 2-inch LCD make this camera a strong option for the economic point-and-shoot digital camera user that values manual control options. There is the opportunity for 4x optical zoom, manual focus, white balance, shutter speed, aperture, and EV compensation. The E550 captures still images in five resolution settings, and has video capture available (with up to thirty seconds of audio) at 30 fps in two resolution sizes.....

The Fujifilm Finepix E550 is a 6 megapixel digital camera that retains the same design as the cheaper Finepix E510 and E500, but crucially improves on those models in a number of key areas. Most obviously it has 6 megapixels rather than the 5 and 4 of the E510 and E500. Perhaps more importantly than the extra megapixel is the kind of sensor that the E550 uses, namely Fuji's Super CCD HR, which allows the camera to offer an interpolated resolution of 12.3 megapixels, plus a RAW file format.

The Fujifilm FinePix E550 6.3MP compact boots as fast as any digital camera we've tested (aside from digital SLRs). Focus is quick and there's hardly any lag on the shutter release or from shot to shot, as long as you're shooting without flash. The E550 uses Fujifilm's own SuperCCD HR sensor, which competes well with the spate of 7MP cameras recently released on the market, especially when shooting at the intelligently interpolated 12MP mode. We're quite enamored of the E550, which takes very good images with little fuss. And at $499, this camera is such a great deal that it's an Editors' Choice for compact cameras.

The Fujifilm FinePix E550 digital camera was introduced in July 2004. This new model looks a lot like the FinePix 810 digital camera but is presented like a 'no-nonsense' camera, or in other words, it's a digital camera from the 'E' series FinePix digital cameras. The Fujifilm FinePix E550 digital camera is equipped with a Super CCD HR sensor which delivers a resolution of 6.3 megapixels. This sensor should ensure lower sensitivity and a more precise signal/noise ratio.
