The HP Deskjet 6540 Color Inkjet Printer ($149.99 direct) delivers what every ink jet ideally should, but few do. On the one hand, it's a speed demon. On the other, its output quality ranges from just short of very good to just short of excellent. Starting from a foundation like that, any other features - such as the ability to switch the black cartridge with either a color photo cartridge or a photo-gray cartridge for monochrome photos - are icing on the cake.
