Sony Alpha DSLR-A900 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.31 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "The success of the Alpha 900 amongst the Minolta, Konica Minolta and Sony faithful seems assured; at a launch price of just shy of $3000 it offers a lot of 'bang for your buck' and there is undoubtedly a significant number of Minolta film SLR users who've been waiting years for a full frame digital body on which to use their existing lenses. ...

... In conclusion this is, more than anything else at this end of the market, a true photographer's camera, with at least one totally unique feature (the Super SteadyShot stabilization) and one that offers the best viewfinder and highest nominal resolution (and the lowest 'cost per megapixel, incidentally) in its class. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Sony Alpha 900 enters a market that up to now has been dominated by experienced manufacturers like Canon and Nikon. Recently, Nikon attracted some attention and stirred up this extremely demanding market. The experienced competitors all have some beautiful professional equipment in their assortment and it might be a job and a half for a newcomer to conquer market share in this segment. ...

... The technical DIWA Lab tests tend to put its finger on the spot. In the case of the Sony Alpha A900, we may conclude that the camera easily keeps up and that it is an excellent base to start developing the Alpha generation II. The limited sensitivity settings do look skimpy compared to the competitors, however the quality is fine up to 800 ISO. A higher ISO than 800 requires a struggle to keep the signal/noise ratio under control. ..."

Review (Summary): "I recently had the opportunity to get my hands on one for a day, along with a Canon 1DsM3 kindly loaned to me by Kayell Queensland. I was able to see for myself how the new camera stacks up against what has up until now been regarded as representing the pinnacle of dSLRs. ...

... As far as image quality is concerned, bear in mind that I had to look quite closely at the files – serious pixel-peeping really – to see the differences. I always figure that if I have to look this closely then the differences are probably so close as to be insignificant. ..."

Review (Summary): "a camera is more than just megapixels. And the Alpha 900 ($3,000, street, body only) packs a gorgeous viewfinder that covers the entire frame, plus real-world resolution greater than that of any camera we've tested. ...

... With its first full-frame DSLR, Sony has shown that it can definitely run with the big boys. While we have yet to test Canon's new, midrange, full-frame 5D Mark II, this Sony currently packs the most resolution you can get in a DSLR. Add to that fast AF, an outrageously appealing viewfinder, and a body with a great grip and plenty of dedicated controls, and you've got a winner. ..."

Hands-on Preview (Summary): "It does indeed have a full-frame 24.6 Megapixel sensor, image stabilization, and superb build quality. It also features an enormous optical viewfinder that shows 100% of the frame, an ultra-sharp 3-inch LCD display, 5 frame/second continuous shooting, great battery life, and much, much more. About the only things the A900 doesn't have are a built-in flash and live view. ...

... Focusing performance was very good, at least with the pricey F2.8, 24 - 70 mm lens that I tested. Focusing times ranged from virtually instantaneous in the best case scenarios, to around one second when the AF-assist lamp had to be used in low light situations. ..."

Review (Summary): "Boasting no less than 24.6 megapixels, the Sony Alpha DSLR-A900 is the highest-resolution digital SLR in the world, and also the first "full-frame" digital camera with an anti-shake function integrated into the body. ...

... In terms of image quality, the A900 is also hard to find fault with. The resolution is jaw-dropping, the dynamic range is fantastic, the tonality is great and the colors are pleasing. You do get quite a bit of noise at ISO 1600 and higher (and sometimes lower as well), but it won't really impact on the final output unless you print those high-ISO shots really, really big, ..."

Review (Summary): "It takes but a glance to see that the Sony Alpha A900 is unique among modern digital SLR cameras. The large, pyramidal shape behind the SONY logo suggests that a very large pentaprism glass element lies underneath. A quick glance through the viewfinder completes the impression: it's like a room in there, into which it seems you might fall if you're not careful. ...

... First, the Sony A900's image quality is truly awe-inspiring. Opening a file in Photoshop and hitting Command + to get to 100% reminds me of that scene in Blade Runner when Deckard uses the Esper photoanalysis machine. ..."

Review (Summary): "In its new flagship DSLR, the A900, Sony has eschewed gimmicks like live view and video recording and instead focused upon producing a camera with real appeal to professional photographers. ...

Sony's DSLR-A900 comes at a very competitive price for its capabilities. Being considerably cheaper than the top-of-the-range modes from Canon and Nikon, it will have genuine appeal to anyone who wants an interchangeable-lens DSLR camera that meets professional build and functionality standards. ..."
