Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P150 Review

Review Summary
The Sony DSC-P150 is the most recent in Sony's highly popular line of subcompact "P-series" digicams, this latest model sporting a massive 7.2 megapixel CCD, a 3x optical zoom lens, and an expanded range of nine preset Scene modes to choose from. Pretty much identical to the DSC-P100 in all aspects except sensor resolution, the main attraction of the P150 will be its higher resolution, which comes with surprisingly little increase in image noise.

The Sony P150 is similar to the P100 in every respect but one: Though the image quality of the Sony P100 is very good, the image quality of the Sony P150 is simply excellent with one of the highest detail available on a P&S, even approaching that obtainable on some of the best Prosumer models. Noise is very low and negligible at the lowest ISO 100. There is very little observable chromatic aberration (incl. the dreaded purple fringing) in everyday shots.

Announced in July 2004, The DSC-P150 is Sony's latest salvo in the megapixel wars, and the first truly compact 7 megapixel camera. It's based closely on the current DSC-P100, with the only differences - resolution aside - being the brushed metal casing. With 7 million pixels and a 3x Carl Zeiss lens squeezed into a body around 1" thick, the P150 is sure to appeal to those who want to pack a lot of power into their pocket.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P150 ($499) is an ultra-compact, ultra-responsive digital camera with a whopping 7.2 Megapixel CCD. Other features include a 3X zoom lens, limited manual controls, VGA movie mode, and an AF-assist lamp. The P150 is available in silver, blue, or black bodies. In the last six months the 7 Megapixel field has grown tremendously, with new competition from the likes of Canon, Olympus, and Pentax. How does the P150 perform? Find out in our review!

The Sony DSC-P150 is so similar in appearance to the DSC-P100/P120, that it is only with a chance to compare them side by side that subtle differences begin to emerge in the ways the cameras are finished, and in particular, the type of finish used on the front section of each camera. Shape, external controls and lenses are identical. Just like the P100, the body of the P150 is entirely covered in metal, but here with a brushed steel look on the front. Indeed, the resemblances are more numerous than the differences, and the surest way to recognize it is by the bold 7.2 megapixels stenciled on the front of the camera.

Hands-on Preview: The P150 is obviously based on the current P100; the body design and control layout appears to be identical, though the new model sports a natty brushed metal finish on the front. As with the P100 the lens retracts fully into the body, meaning the camera is - at around an inch thick - easily pocketable.........

If this camera were a DVD, we'd rate it an enjoyable flick but skimpy on the special features. Sony crams 7 megapixels into a compact package that delivers good photo quality, great performance, and outstanding battery life but includes none of the extras found in other, similarly priced 7-megapixel models. Snapshooters who want a small camera for big prints and just the basics in manual controls should be happy with this camera's photo quality, robust performance, and shoot-all-day battery. More-serious photographers looking for a heftier feature set will want to check out the competition.

The Sony Cybershot DSC-P150 is the top of the line in Sony's ultra-compact P-series cameras and it certainly does a great job of capturing quality images. The camera follows the usual Sony pattern - it is easy to use with the most important functions readily accessible accompanied by a well-designed on-screen display. Image quality is impressive and noise seems to be well-controlled. There is plenty of resolution to create large photo-quality prints.
