In what is almost becoming a yearly ritual, we have been looking forward to the arrival of the newest Canon G-series camera. This time, it's the PowerShot G6. The G6 carries on the high quality finish of earlier G cameras. Its body is metal-clad but is taller than the G3 or G5. It also offers redesigned controls, and a much deeper grip that has a better ergonomic design.

| First of all, let's make it clear that all of Canon's G-series digital cameras are relatively big and if you're looking for something small to pocket on your travels, you may well find these cameras a little on the bulky side. However, the G6 is the most compact out of the range, representing a 30g saving in weight and around a 10 percent reduction in size over the G5. That said, when I first unboxed the camera and showed it to some friends they all commented on how chunky looking it was. This is largely down to the beefy rubber-coated grip, which provides a very well balanced and comfortable hold on the camera. The controls have also been reorganised thanks to some clever mounting technologies and fall neatly under my thumb and forefinger - but only if you're right-handed. |

| A modest update to the G5, the 7-megapixel PowerShot G6 faithfully follows in the footsteps of previous Canon G-series models. With a powerful, enthusiast-oriented feature set and very solid photo quality, it gets most of the same high marks as its predecessors. But its good-but-not-great performance lags behind the competition's, keeping the G6 from garnering the Editors' Choice-level ratings of its ancestors. |

| Whether you're a point-and-click shooter who's starting to want more control with your photography or an already-converted enthusiast who doesn't want to lug around a digital SLR, the satin-aluminum Canon PowerShot G6 could satisfy on both counts. It's not cheap - at $700, it ties the other enthusiast model here, the Sony V3, for the most expensive of our 7MP cameras -but it's well worth the money, making it an Editors' Choice in the enthusiast category. |

| The Canon PowerShot G6 is the latest in a long line of high-end digicams from Canon Inc, reaching back to the original G1, first introduced back in the fall of 2000. Canon's G-series PowerShots have consistently been among the most popular cameras on our site, thanks to their combination of a rich feature set, excellent optics, and superior image quality. The new Canon G6 keeps the same excellent 4x zoom lens and most of my favorite features from the previous PowerShot G5 model, but bumps the sensor resolution to 7.1 megapixels up from the G5's 5.0. Besides the larger sensor though, the new Canon G6 incorporates quite a few other enhancements, including a slightly larger tilt/swivel LCD display, a redesigned camera body, menu system and user interface. | Successor to the popular PowerShot G5 the new PowerShot G6 was announced on 19th August 2004. At the beginning of the year it became clear that Canon wouldn't be jumping on the six megapixel 1/1.8" CCD bandwagon, instead they were holding off for the higher resolution seven megapixel sensor and chose to introduce both the G6 and S70 with this CCD in August. The increase in output pixel count from the G5 to the G6 is quite a bit more (2.0 million pixels) than from the G3 to the G5 (1.2 million pixels) and so it's likely that the G6 will be of considerable interest to G5 owners and also those G3 owners who chose not to upgrade to the G5.

| The G6 is Canon's latest top-end model in the PowerShot range. An update of the old G5, the PowerShot G6 offers a versatile package of point and shoot options with a truck load of manual controls and sophisticated options for the enthusiast snapper.
The key kit includes 12 shooting modes (two of which are custom settings so that you can tailor camera control to your preferred way of shooting), a large 2-inch vari-angle LCD screen (it twists, turns and flips so that you can view it at almost any angle), JPEG or RAW capture, (RAW offers complete control of the results on PC, later) and it has Canon’s latest DIGIC processor for fast accurate image processing.

| As we have come to expect from most major manufacturers, the introduction of new features in the digital camera market necessitates an update of previous models. The same is true for Canon's latest model in the G-series. After four very successful models - there never was a G4 - it is now time for the Canon G6. As compared to the G5, Canon's latest model has gained a 7.1 effective megapixel sensor made by Sony, whereas the body has been redesigned into a more compact shape. Autofocus times have been improved and the camera now uses the 9-point AiAF system as used in most other Canon models. |
