Canon EOS-1D Mark II Review
|
Review Summary
The Canon EOS-1D Mark II is the new (as of April, 2004) flagship of the Canon EOS line. It is neither the highest resolution, nor the most expensive (that title goes to the $8,000 11 megapixel EOS-1Ds.) However, the feature set it brings to the table puts it ahead of anything else currently on the market. This camera is not for the faint of heart though - its $4,500 price tag and weight of 3.5 pounds without a lens can make it rather intimidating for all but those who recognize and want its power.

| Canon ups the ante with its 8-megapixel EOS-1D Mark II, the fastest-shooting digital SLR on the market. Made for magazine photographers covering news and sports, the Mark II also works well for portrait shooters who want a versatile, small-format digital camera. The Mark II replaces the EOS-1D--which was already at the top of its class--and makes improvements across the board. |

| The new Canon EOS-1D Mark II is the successor to the Canon EOS-1D which was announced and introduced at the end of 2001. This new generation of digital SLR almost doubles resolution with its new eight megapixel CMOS sensor, doubles the size of the continuous shooting buffer and increases continuous shooting speed very slightly. The EOS-1D Mark II can shoot eight megapixel images at a rate of 8.5 frames per second and buffer up to 40 frames before dropping down to a slower shooting rate........ |

| The Canon EOS-1D was a groundbreaking digicam when it was first announced in late 2001, and held its ground amazingly well against the competition in all the time since then. In January of 2004, Canon announced the EOS-1D Mark II, a radical update of the original 1D, doubling its resolution, while simultaneously increasing its continuous shooting speed slightly to a blazing 8.5 frames/second, and cutting image noise in the process. Other specs between the cameras are fairly close (although the Canon EOS 1D Mark II's low image noise levels are particularly impressive), but the net result is that Canon has staked out a sizeable piece of the high-end digital SLR turf in a decisive manner. No other camera currently on the market comes close to matching the Canon EOS-1D Mark II for its combination of resolution and shooting speed. Read on for all the details, the Canon EOS-1D Mark II is one amazing camera! |

| If you've never held a Canon 1 Series camera, you likely won't understand the almost visceral charge one gets from handling one of these cameras. They seem to be carved from a solid block of unobtainium. After a few days of use in the studio or on location almost any other camera starts to pale by comparison. These cameras are tough, beautifully made, and as feature-rich as one could want. They also traditionally produce excellent image quality.
The newest member of the Series I family is the 1D Mark II. Announced in early February 2004, this latest Canon DSLR is to start shipping to photographers in early April. In mid-March Canon sent me a full production camera for testing, just a few days before I was scheduled to do a wildlife shoot in Nebraska. What better venue than shooting birds in the wild to test out this new high-speed camera.
