Canon Powershot A85 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.00 (out of 10)
The Canon PowerShot A85 is another 2004 update to Canon's wildly popular PowerShot A70 model from 2003. The major change between the A75 (the previous update) and Canon A85 is a higher resolution sensor, moving from 3.3 to 4.0. As with the PowerShot A75, there's a larger LCD (1.8 inches, up from 1.5 on the A70), more Special modes, and a faster, more efficient DIGIC processor. The PowerShot A85 also debuts at the same introductory price as its predecessor, the A75. Featuring a full 13 shooting modes, the Canon A85 offers not only manual and full-auto exposure control, but five preset capture modes, and six Scene modes to boot.

If you're looking for a simple, compact point-and-shoot digital camera at a great price, then the Canon PowerShot A85 might just be the camera for you. The Canon PowerShot A85 can easily fit into a small bag or purse and is very easy to use. Simply turn it on and start taking photos. The Canon PowerShot A85 has lots of manual features, but I expect that most people will never use them. They'll just leave the camera setting on "Auto" and will keep shooting.

The Canon PowerShot A85 rounds out a solid line of point-and-shoot digital cameras from Canon. The 4-megapixel A85 is meant to lure beginners into digital photography and help them transition to an intermediate level of shooting. The 13 shooting modes have enough automatic functions to make this camera easy for anyone to use, but enough semi-automatic and manual features to allow a learning photographer to improve their skills.

The Canon PowerShot A85 ($299) is the 4 Megapixel sibling of the PowerShot A75. The two cameras are identical except for the difference in resolution, and the frame rate in the continuous shooting and movie modes. Both cameras are updates of the incredibly popular PowerShot A70, which was one of my favorite cameras in 2003. Some of the changes between the A70 and A85 are . . . .

In Canon's ever-growing arsenal of consumer-level compact digital cameras, the 4-megapixel Canon PowerShot A85 replaces the popular PowerShot A70. Unfortunately, the A85's images suffer from a lack of sharpness. If you can find it cheap enough (it usually sells for under $300) it's still a decent buy, but we recommend the Kodak EasyShare LS743 for its smaller size and sharper images.
