Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 Review

Review Summary
Review (Summary): "The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 features a seven megapixel sensor which is coupled to a Zeiss-branded 3x optical zoom and a 2.5-inch LCD display. The DSC-W80's 35 to 105mm equivalent lens incorporates Sony's Super Steady Shot optical image stabilization to minimize blur caused by camera shake at slow shutter speeds. ...

It's hard to call the Sony W80 the bottom rung in the W-Series because it only gives up a few pixels for a lower price. Otherwise the Sony W80 has all the bells and whistles, making it a terrific bargain. It has a Bionz processor, face detection technology, High ISO, Super SteadyShot, in-camera editing, and HD output signal. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Cyber-shot DSC-W80 ($250) is a midrange model in Sony's W-series line of compact cameras. It has a number of step-up features from the lower-end models (the W35 and W55), including image stabilization, a faster image processor, face detection, and component video output. That's on top of its more standard features: a 7.2MP CCD, 3X optical zoom lens, 2.5" LCD display, and VGA movie mode. ...

... The W80 is a 100% point-and-shoot camera, with absolutely zero manual controls. It has a few scene modes, though not nearly as many as some other cameras in its class. Like most cameras these days, the DSC-W80 has a high sensitivity mode, which boosts the ISO as high as 3200 in order to get a sharp photo. Unfortunately, what you get instead is a drab photo with mushy details - avoid this feature if possible. ..."

Review (Summary): "Announced at PMA in February 2007, the Cyber-shot W80 is one of three almost identical models that differ only in their pixel count (the range-topping W200 is 12MP, the W90 is 8MP and the W80 is 7MP). The W series has been gradually refined over the last few generations and now offers a more affordable alternative to the ultra-slim 'T' series whilst still offering a compact body, optical image stabilization and - new for these models - HDTV (1080i) output - albeit with an optional composite video cable or Cyber-shot Station dock. ...

... the W80 is a camera that is capable of producing surprisingly good results in good light at ISO 100 and is perfectly usable at ISO 400-800 in low light if you don't want big prints (the church interiors in the samples gallery, for example, are better than I expected), but a camera that falls down in what I consider to be one of the most important areas for a camera such as this; pictures of people indoors in low light - with or without flash. ..."

Review (Summary): "... The model I'm reviewing today is the Cyber-shot DSC-W80, a mid-range 7.2-megapixel pocket compact featuring a 3x zoom, a 2.5-inch LCD monitor plus optical viewfinder, and image stabilization.... In overall style the W80 is fairly conservative and understated. The body is predominantly aluminum, with a matt finish on the back and a brushed effect on the front, with chrome trim. In some markets it is also available in either black, white or pink, although these alternative finishes appear to be unavailable in the UK. ...

... The W80's only real weakness is its overall image quality, and even then it's not all bad news. Focusing, exposure and colour reproduction are very good, and the f/2.8-5.2 Carl Zeiss-branded lens is excellent, producing a high level of sharpness from edge to edge, with only a little barrel distortion at the wide angle end. Unfortunately the image files, averaging around 2.2MB for a typical scene, are quite compressed, and there is a general smudging of fine detail. ..."
