Canon Powershot G9 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.10 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "No, you're not having dÉjÀ vu-the Canon PowerShot G9 is physically virtually identical to its predecessor, the G7; the sole differences are an optical viewfinder shrunk to make way for a larger 3-inch LCD and the lens ring and release button darkened from silver to black. ...

The Canon PowerShot G9 gets a leg up over its predecessor by improving photo quality and restoring raw-format support while maintaining the same excellent performance and body design. You probably can't miss with this model as a compact backup for your dSLR."

Review (Summary): ". In any case Canon did when developing the PowerShot G7. A terrific camera except for one minus; no RAW format was available and especially the photographer wanting a compact camera besides his DSLR was disappointed. But the successor, the Canon PowerShot G9, does offer RAW format making this top compact camera a very interesting one for the demanding and the professional photographer. ...

... The Canon PowerShot G9 is not the perfect compact camera but getting close. Maybe the Canon G10 will be it. We would like larger wide angle, less pixels (indeed you read it correctly!), improved RAW support and additional features such as wireless operation. ..."

Review (Summary): "... I should start by giving Canon a little credit for so quickly responding to at least some of the critisisms of the G7; the G9 may be a relatively minor upgrade but it does knock a few of the rough edges off its predecessor and - most importantly - brings RAW capture (and highly usable RAW capture at that) back to the G series. The new screen is nice too, and the handling performance tweaks might not be enough, but they do bring a noticeable improvement.

... in the right hands it's a real step up from the mass of indistinguishable compacts on the market, and the more you use it, the more you'll grow to appreciate it. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Canon PowerShot G9 ($499) is a high-end fixed-lens camera offering almost every feature you could imagine. It replaces the PowerShot G7, which was a disappointment compared to previous models, in this reviewers opinion. The new G9 takes care of many of the issues that people had with the G7, with the most notable change being the addition of RAW image support. However, the rotating LCD that made the G-series famous is still nowhere to be found. ...

The PowerShot G9 is a solid high-end camera, though it won't be replacing your digital SLR anytime soon. It offers a full set of features, both automatic and manual, and throws them into a well-built, expandable body. If you keep the ISO as low as possible you'll get some nice photos out of the camera, though a D-SLR will wipe the floor with the G9 at higher sensitivities. ..."

Review (Summary): "After six very successful models, the Canon “G” series line of cameras, that started with the G1 of 2000, has grown into the G9 of 2007. The latest model has kept all the good things from the previous cameras, and although it lost its popular rotating LCD screen somewhere along the way, it has gained a 12-megapixel sensor, a 3.0-inch LCD display and RAW image capture - which was dropped from the G7- has returned. ...

... The serious photographer though, will certainly find the Canon G9 to be a worthwhile investment and a true photographic tool, as you can really create photographs with it instead of snapshots. There are plenty of functions to try out and the G9 enables you to use your creativity to the full. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Canon PowerShot G9, following last year's PowerShot G7 model, is visually very similar to its predecessor - the only obvious changes being a re-profiling of the handgrip and rear panel. Under the skin, the Canon G9 offers a CCD sensor resolution of twelve megapixels (up from ten in the G7), coupled to the same Canon-branded 35-210mm equivalent 6x optical zoom lens. ...

... Sure, I wish the Canon G9 were just a bit smaller to fit in a shirt pocket without strangling me. But at least the Canon G9's large body contains a lot of good stuff. With above-average performance, a 6x optical zoom, image stabilization, and that gorgeous 3.0-inch LCD, the Canon G9 is the G-series reborn. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Canon Powershot G9 sees the welcome return of the RAW image format to the G-series of prosumer compact digital cameras. Controversially dropped from the previous G7 model, Canon have bowed to customer demand and restored RAW, once again making the Powershot G9 a great backup camera for a DSLR owner, or even a viable alternative. Other new features on the Canon G9 include an upgraded 12.1 megapixel sensor, larger 3 inch LCD screen, and improved Face Detection mode. From the outside the G9 looks virtually identical to the G7, so are there enough internal improvements to make the G9 a worthwhile upgrade? Mark Goldstein took the Canon Powershot G9 for a test-drive to find out.."

Review (Summary): "The new PowerShot G9 takes the retro-styled body and 6x optically-stabilized lens of its predecessor and makes a number of improvements. Most obviously the resolution has increased from 10 to 12.1 Megapixels, the screen enlarged from 2.5 to 3in (along with a small boost in detail), and there’s now support for RAW recording. ...

... Ultimately the PowerShot G9 may not be without its faults, but there's simply few if any alternatives which offer this degree of control and flexibility in a pocketable form factor. There are certainly smaller compacts out there, but none have the G9's control and options. And while there's decent controls on (most) super-zooms and DSLRs, none will squeeze into your pocket. Indeed this could be all you need to know..."
