Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 DSLR Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.52 (out of 10)
Hands-on Preview (Summary): "My preliminary experience with a Sony A700 pre-release camera has been great. The big, bright viewfinder makes framing images surprisingly easy, and the 3-inch, high-resolution LCD is a wonderful place to review your images. It was only a few minutes into my time with the A700 when I pulled the camera away from my eye and said, "Wow!" ...

... With Sony's new Alpha A700, the digital SLR camera market just got even hotter. Sony and Minolta fans have needed this camera, and Sony has delivered. The Maxxum 7D was a great design worth upgrading to keep up with advancing technology, and it seems the Sony A700 will be a more than competent contender in the market. ..."

Review (Summary): "... The A700 is an extremely impressive camera both in the flesh and on paper. It features Sony's brand new Exmor 12.23-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, the proven Super SteadyShot moving-sensor image stabilisation system, a rugged environmentally-sealed magnesium alloy body and an ultra-sharp three-inch LCD monitor. Its performance claims are equally impressive, with 5fps continuous shooting, an 11-point cross-type AF system, maximum sensitivity of 6400 ISO and a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000th of a second. ...

Having produced what is arguably the best entry-level DSLR on the market in the A100, Sony has followed it up with another outstanding camera. The A700 is a superb tool for the enthusiast or semi-professional photographer, providing high quality results in almost any conditions. ..."

Review (Summary): "If the trend with many digital SLR cameras has been towards making them more compact, with the Alpha 700, Sony is resolutely taking a much more traditional approach to SLR design. Unlike the A100, the A700 is a big camera and has a hefty weight that makes it more comparable to larger, pro SLRs, which is exactly where Sony wants it. ...

... Using an APS-C format CMOS with a total of 13 million pixels, the Sony A700 uses 12.2 million of these to capture images. The sensor is mounted on an image sensor-shift mechanism - called Super SteadyShot image stabilizer - that counteracts the involuntary movements of the photographer. The same system is used to shake loose any dust particles that might have settled on the low-pass filter positioned in front of the CMOS each time the camera is turned off. ..."

Hands-on Preview (Summary): "The A700 features a jump in resolution to 12.2 Megapixels with a new CMOS sensor, making it the highest resolution Alpha body, and a step-up from existing rival 10 Megapixel DSLRs. The sensor measures the same size as the existing APS-C chip in the A100, so rumours of a 1.25x crop or larger didn't emerge for this particular model. On the upside though, this makes the A700 compatible with the full range of Alpha lenses including DT models, and like the A100 before it, all effectively become stabilized thanks to the built-in - and improved - Super SteadyShot. ...

... It's certainly got a lot going for it, and is a big improvement over the A100, but up against very tough competition. From the written specs and press previews, the Canon EOS 40D and in particular the Nikon D300 look like appealing more to the traditional pro photographers. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Sony Alpha A700 is the gate-opener for a new batch of DSLR cameras with resolutions of 12 megapixels and functionality aimed at semi-professional photographers. At the same time, this digital SLR is more than a simple resolution upgrade to its predecessor, the first Alpha DSLR to bear the Sony name. Still based on a legacy of technology acquired from Konica-Minolta, the Sony Alpha A700 reminds us of its origins even more than the A100. ...

... The bottom line is that the Sony Alpha A700 brings many unique features and produces high quality images under most conditions. Except for long shutter-speeds, this is one of the best DSLRs to choose."

Review (Summary): "The Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 ($1400) is the second digital SLR from the Japanese electronics giant. This camera was first shown at PMA earlier this year, and had been referred to as the "advanced amateur" model. The camera is a descendant of Konica Minolta's digital SLRs, as Sony bought their assets in 2006. Thus, the A700 has many of the same features that were found on Minolta D-SLRs of days past. These include the Alpha lens mount, hot shoe, sensor-shift image stabilizer, EyeStart AF, and more.

... With their Alpha DSLR-A700, Sony has created a midrange digital SLR that keeps up with the "big boys". The A700 offers an excellent mix of photo quality, performance, features, and build quality -- not to mention support for legacy Minolta lenses. Yes, it's lacking the live view feature of its competitors, but I don't really miss it, to be honest. While I don't see Canon and Nikon owners rushing to eBay to sell their gear to buy the A700, it's a great D-SLR for those with a collection of Minolta lenses. I enjoyed my time with the DSLR-A700, and can recommend it without hesitation. ..."

Hands-on Preview (Summary): "The new Sony A700 is a beefy SLR with a 12.2 megapixel CMOS sensor designed for the photo enthusiast. The sensor was made by Sony specifically for this camera, according to the company. The Sony A700's sensor has a 1.5x crop factor, the same as most other digital SLR cameras on the market.

Better, our experience says it should help photographers make great images, which is more what a camera is about than doing well in some spec comparison table. ..."

Review (Summary): "Clad in a tough magnesium alloy/polycarbonate outer skin, this camera boasts fast 11 point auto focus, with special overlapping cross type sensors in the centre for ultra precision, a 5 frames per second shooting rate, 12 megapixel file size, which is currently the largest file size available in this category (shared with the upcoming Nikon D300), a very fine resolution 3 inch LCD for image review, and HDMI output that will turn your large screen TV into a high resolution photo monitor. ...

The A700 is a beautifully crafted photographic instrument. In my time with it I grew quite comfortable with the camera and found it's output to be very dependable. ..."

Hands-on Preview (Summary): "The A700 is the first DSLR to feature Sony's new CMOS sensor ...The interesting thing about the new Exmor sensor - announced a couple of months ago... - is that it takes a very different approach to A/D conversion (turning the analogue output of the sensor into the digital 0's and 1's that will be processed and turned into the final raw or JPEG file). Instead of using a separate A/D processor further down the imaging pipeline, the Exmor has lots of them built into CMOS sensor itself (there's one per column - that's over 4000 in this chip).

... One thing that is clear when you start shooting with the A700 is that Sony has worked hard on performance; it feels very responsive, button presses for menus or image playback occurring instantly and there's no feeling of lag when changing settings. Other performance criteria such as continuous shooting speed, buffering and write speeds were all very good, with a pretty blazing 34 MB/sec write speed with SanDisk Extreme IV cards. I should also make special mention of that new high resolution LCD monitor which really does make a difference to the whole shoot & review experience. ..."

Review (Summary): "...There's a 12.24 megapixel CMOS sensor, replacing the 10 megapixel CCD sensor of the A100, a 11 point autofocus system, extensive ISO range of 100-6400, 5fps continuous shooting (up to 17 shots in RAW mode), a fantastic, high resolution 3 inch LCD screen, magnesium body with dust/moisture resistant seals and a fastest shutter speed of 1/8000th. The A700 builds on the existing Maxxum / Dynax lens mount with the re-christened Alpha mount, with the majority of Konica Minolta lenses being supported. As with the A100, the new A700 incorporates several Konica Minolta technologies, most notably an anti-shake system that's built into the camera body, and the eye-start auto-focus system which makes the camera continuously focus when you hold the viewfinder up to your eye. ...

... If you're already a Konica Minolta or Sony A100 DSLR owner, upgrading to the A700 is something of a no-brainer, helped by a generously competitive price-tag. If you haven't invested in a DSLR system yet, the Sony A700 is a strong contender for your cash, especially considering that Sony have invested a huge amount of money in the future of their DSLR range, with even more new lenses and bodies on the horizon. ..."
