Kodak Easyshare Z712 IS Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.00 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "Some model names make no sense, but others, such as Kodak's EasyShare Z712 IS reflect specific details of the product. This Kodak is part of the company's line of superzoom cameras, hence the big Z. It includes a 7.1-megapixel sensor, so the model number starts with a 7. It's long 36-432mm f/2.8-4.8 lens totals a 12x optical zoom, therefore the model number ends in 12. Finally, since it includes optical image stabilization, the model name ends in IS. ...

... If you tend to be more of a snapshooter, but want the reach of a 12x zoom lens, you'll probably like the Kodak EasyShare Z712 IS. In fact, even advanced amateurs will be impressed with its manual exposure controls and image quality, but more choosy photographers may take fault with the artifacts we saw and the noise at higher ISOs. However, for this price, it's very hard to find a camera that matches the Z712 IS."

Review (Summary): "The Kodak EasyShare Z712 IS ($249) is a low-cost, but full-featured ultra zoom camera. It features a 7.1 effective Megapixel CCD, 12X optical zoom, optical image stabilization, full manual controls, a 2.5" LCD display, and the ease-of-use that Kodak cameras are known for. ...

Kodak's EasyShare Z712 IS offers a big lens, image stabilization, a nearly complete set of manual controls, and a ton of scene modes, all for less than $250. Competing models from the likes of Canon, Panasonic, and Sony, cost anywhere from $100 - $200 more than the Z712. While it's not the best ultra zoom on the market, the EasyShare Z712 is certainly one of the best values. ..."

Review (Summary): "Kodak has managed to squeeze a stabilized 12X optical zoom into the compact and square body of the EasyShare Z712 IS, a model that also offers a 7.1 megapixel image and both an electronic viewfinder and a 2.5-inch LCD monitor.

... The Kodak EasyShare Z712 IS is good value for the money. The compression at the highest image quality is a bit stronger than we would like, and the LCD monitor not as crisp as some others. But the camera's capacity to reproduce colors faithfully and the generally good characteristics of the lens, and the fact it includes a very effective stabilization system make it a worthwhile camera. ..."

Preview (Summary): "At PMA 2007 in Las Vegas, Kodak unveiled their latest digital camera, the EasyShare Z712 IS, a lightweight, 7.1-megapixel, 12x optical zoom camera with Optical Image Stabilization and High ISO mode. Available in April 2007 and retailing at $299, this camera is cheaper than many in the high-zoom camera segment.

While the Kodak EasyShare Z712 IS offers some new technologies, like Perfect Touch and their new Color Science Image Processing Chip, its major selling point is the price. If you want a high-zoom camera with a lightweight design at an affordable price, this camera will suffice. However, if you are drawn to this camera because of its "Easy" designation, don't be fooled, most cameras in this category have a full auto mode and will function as a direct point and shoot. For those interested in the Z712 IS, it will likely serve your needs, it just may not provide as much control or the image quality of its competitors."
