Review (Summary): "It is surprising that GE chose to enter the digital camera industry after research firms have claimed that digital cameras have reached their peak household penetration and the industry bubble is about to burst. If a manufacturer enters this late in the game, I would expect them to offer more than the typical digital cameras.
... The G1 does have some interesting highlights: great software that provides a lot more editing than most included software, a $199 price tag, and a panorama stitching mode that stitches everything together in the camera. However, these don’t justify the overexposed or grainy pictures. In the end, the GE G1 just isn’t worth it."

| Review (Summary): "The G1, an entry-level 7-megapixel camera with a 2.5-inch LCD monitor, has a design that places the 3X optical zoom's front lens element on the top left side of the camera - as one holds it - putting it in close proximity to the left hand's fingers, and embeds the AF assist lamp / self-timer indicator even more precariously, right on the edge. ...
... While the G1 will satisfy the needs of many point and shoot users, it does face some stiff competition from companies whose name is more readily associated with photography than GE. The G1 is a debut camera, and its descendants may well develop into more impressive and feature-rich cameras over time. But at this time, however, the list prices currently indicated by some retailers may make it a tough sell amongst well-informed camera buyers." |

| Hands-on Preview: "The digital camera market today is a place of razor-thin profit margins and competition more reminiscent of a street brawl than the gentlemanly rivalry we used to see. As such, we don't see newcomers very often: most companies look at the entrenched hold that the big companies have on the camera market and decide to move into new markets where they are less likely to get a bloody nose. But newcomers do try their luck sometimes, and General Electric is giving it a go.
It's hard to come to a conclusion on the G1 without knowing the price; General Imaging has said that their new cameras will be priced between $149 and $399, but didn't specify where the G1 would fall in this range. We would expect it to fall somewhere in the middle, though: This is a value-driven camera that has no outstanding features, so the price and image quality will be what ultimately decides how well it does. But it has most of the features that people look for; decent resolution, a good sized screen (albeit a rather low resolution one) and a decent control system that bodes well for this new camera manufacturer. |

| Review (Summary): "The G1 ($150 street price) is one of the first digital cameras from GE, a company more famous for light bulbs and jet engines than digital cameras. GE isn't actually designing or producing these cameras - rather, they've licensed their brand to General Imaging, a new company founded by a former Olympus executive. ...
... Mediocre in every way, about the only positive things I can say are that it has a nice design and a snappy continuous shooting mode. Everything else is average or worse, including picture and video quality, speed, focusing performance, and the quality of the LCD display. In the very competitive ultra-compact camera field, the G1's flaws make me unable to recommend it. ..." |

| Review (Summary): "Stop. Do not pass Go. Do not give General Electric $200 for the G1. With so many mediocre snapshot cameras on the market, ya gotta wonder why anyone would feel compelled to offer another-unless the people behind GE's new camera line are drinking some doctored Kool-Aid.
... The G1 can, on occasion, deliver decent quality shots. As long as there's nothing too dark or too bright in the scene, exposures look fine. And the automatic white balance works pretty well. However, the camera more often produces photos with soft edges and smeared details..." |
