Review (Summary): "... The Samsung i7 offers a very innovative way of accessing all of these options. The large 3 inch LCD screen actually rotates through 180 degrees, with different functionality available at each of the 0, 90 and 180 degree settings. The LCD is a touch-screen model, with virtually all of the device's options operated by interacting with the graphical user interface. On the camera side, standout features include Face Recognition AF & AE, ISO 1600 mode, 800×592 pixel MPEG-4 movies, 14 scene modes and a wide range of picture-editing effects.
... Only the presence of significant noise at slow ISO settings spoils the party, but you probably won't notice this if you mainly shoot in good lighting conditions. And unlike the Sony G1 that we reviewed last week, you won't have to pay a massive price premium for all of the extra functionality that the Samsung i7 offers. Highly recommended both as a multimedia device and as a compact camera."

| Hands-on Preview: "The Samsung i7 is a hybrid device: part digital camera, part video player, and part MP3 player. The camera side of the device is built around a 7.2-megapixel, 1/2.5 inch CCD sensor twinned with a rotating 3-inch LCD touch screen. The way it works is unusual since you set the mode by rotating the screen. In the natural position, the device is in MP3 player mode. Rotate the screen 90 degrees, and it configures itself as a personal media player. Twist it another 90 degrees, and it switches to camera mode. It sounds odd, but it works surprisingly well. However, the device suffers the curse of the hybrid device. It's the jack of all trades, but the master of none.
We weren’t able to test the image quality of the camera. It has a pretty good set of features but nothing outstanding. The video and audio player modes are the same. They do the basic tasks, but the screen is small compared to a dedicated portable video player, and the audio player is nowhere near as easy to use as an iPod... |

| Review (Summary): "There are some cameras that promise a lot but when you get them home with the curtains drawn, it's all rather a disappointment. Not so with this smooth, dark beauty. For a start, it's three things in one - camera with 7Mp res and 3x optical zoom, MP3 player and video player. And it comes with a whopping 3in. screen that rotates into three positions that represent each of the functions. ...
Performance wise, it's pretty average and you don't have to go far before the frailties start to show. The ISO performance is poor and detail resolution for landscapes is indifferent at best. Where the camera does shine is in rendering portraits, and as it does have a very good burst mode feature, it means you can capture batches of shots of people at a time. Stick to people and macro shots and you'll be fine, try much else and it'll end in tears. ..." |
