Canon Powershot SD850 IS Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.00 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "... something that I found surprising is that the 950 IS does not share the 850's popular 28-105mm-equivalent, 3.8x optical zoom range. Instead the 950 has a 4x zoom lens with a focal length range equivalent to 35-140mm. While there are no doubt some people who will prefer the longer telephoto setting, there are plenty of other cameras around that have a 35mm wide angle end, while a 28mm wide angle is relatively rare. ...

The Canon Digital IXUS 950 IS is an expensive luxury camera, but there's no doubt that the money buys solid build quality, brilliant performance and superior picture quality too. There are many other cameras that can beat its specification and features list for less money, but few that can match it for sheer all round class."

Review (Summary): "The Canon PowerShot SD850 IS is an 8 megapixel update of the 6 megapixel SD700 IS. Among other improvements, the SD850 IS is equipped with the company's current DIGIC III processor in place of the older DIGIC II. The new DIGIC offers the latest must-have feature: face detection autofocus, and yields a step up to a maximum ISO sensitivity of 1,600 (vs. 800 in the older camera), thanks to improved noise reduction. There's also a new "Aquarium" scene mode. ...

... The SD850 is a very responsive camera, with low shutter lag in daylight conditions, and good shot-to-shot speeds. It also sports very good battery life, a very capable Movie mode, and excellent download speed. The bright 2.5-inch color LCD monitor is excellent for framing and reviewing shots, and the overall design and layout of the SD850 IS is user-friendly and hassle-free. ..."

Review (Summary): "The IXUS 950 IS features image stabilizer technology to help combat camera-shake, and the optical zoom lens is a 4x model, giving an effective focal length of 35-140mm. Under the surface, the Canon Digital Ixus 950 IS uses the same advanced DIGIC III processor as the company's latest digital SLR cameras for faster performance and image processing. ...

... The flagship Canon Digital IXUS 950 IS admittedly looks a little expensive compared against its 8 megapixel rivals, some of which are more than £100 cheaper, but it doesn't seem to have halted Canon's inexorable rise to number one market status. Certainly you're paying extra for the solid feel and all metal built here, but if your wallet is deep enough you'll find the IXUS 950 IS a reliable performer under most circumstances. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Canon PowerShot SD850 IS ($399) is an ultra-compact camera featuring an 8 Megapixel CCD, 4X optical zoom lens, image stabilization, and a beautiful 2.5" LCD display. Contrary to popular belief, the SD850 does NOT replace the SD800 - rather, it replaces the SD700, which was introduced back in February of 2006. ...

... Photo quality was very good on the SD850 IS. The camera took well-exposed photos, with pleasing, accurate colors. Sharpness is right in the middle: not too sharp, not too soft (and this can be adjusted if you desire). Noise is minimal until you hit ISO 400, with the ISO 800 setting being usable for small prints. ..."

Review (Summary): "The 8-megapixel Canon PowerShot SD850 IS combines several classic features of the Digital Elph line with new perks garnered mainly from a new image processor. The Digic III image processor brings with it face detection technology that can recognize up to nine faces at once, as well as technology that reportedly keeps pictures cleaner. ...

Great pictures are hard to put a price tag on, but Canon stuck a $399 tag on this digital camera. This is high in the price range, especially when compared with other digital cameras that have similar features. ...while the Canon SD850 IS is expensive, it does take great pictures – and those can be priceless."

Review (Summary): "This year's follow-up to the popular SD700 IS is the new PowerShot SD850 IS. The main differences between the two include a jump up to 8.3 megapixels (from 6.2 megapixels) and the new DIGIC III image processor, which brings with it face detection and a higher top sensitivity of ISO 1,600 (up from ISO 800). The SD850 sports nearly everything you'd want in a point-and-shoot. ...

There's very little to complain about on the SD850 IS. Fans of ultracompacts, such as Sony's T-series, might complain that this Canon isn't small enough, but given its excellent image quality and speedy performance, I'm not complaining. ..."

Review (Summary): "Visually the SD850 is virtually indistinguishable from the older model (only the color of the camera back has changed, from black to gray), and there are only a handful of modifications to the specification of the camera. Most notably the sensor now records 8MP images instead of 6 and the resolution of the 2.5" screen has been increased to 230,000 pixels. The 'digital heart' beating in the SD850 is now the latest generation of Canon's imaging processor, the DIGIC III. With the new processor there come a couple of new features too: Face Detection and the useful Auto ISO shift option.

... The SD850 IS is a typical example of what Canon does so well; a beautifully constructed, well designed and capable compact camera that doesn't break any new ground but does what it does with the refinement that comes from years of fine tuning and a refusal to cut every corner in order to hit the lowest possible price. Most importantly it is a pocket camera that turns out great results with minimal effort on the user's part. ..."
