Pentax Optio W30 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.00 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "The Pentax Optio W30 is waterproof and dust-proof. Which means you can take it places that are usually off-limits for digital cameras, like boats, the beach, kayaking, swimming, snorkeling and even shallow diving. Yes, you can take the W30 down to ten feet underwater and use it there for a full two hours.

... As a waterproof camera that doesn't need a separate underwater housing, the Optio W30 doesn't have much competition. The competition it does have, however, is formidable. The Olympus 770 SW is waterproof down to 33 feet and we've taken it much deeper. The Olympus is also more expensive, so it'll come down to individual priorities. As is, the Optio W30 exceeded our expectations."

Review (Summary): "The Pentax Optio W30 is part of a growing line of weather- and dust-resistant cameras geared for active point-and-shooters. It is the fifth in Pentax's W-series, a line of waterproof cameras. The 7.1-megapixel camera comes in a swimmer's body, which allows for longer underwater time at increased depths over its predecessors. Among its other touted features are facial recognition technology and low light shooting abilities at ISO 3200. ...

The Pentax W30, simply put, is a fun camera to use. It will likely find a wide audience, eliciting praise from Michael Phelps types to kids wanting to play Mikey from the Goonies. With waterproof, dustproof (and kid-proof) abilities, the Optio W30 functions as an all-around camera that can be transported on land or water. It also includes basic PDA functions such as alarm and calendar. With an array of internal editing, the camera makes it easy to bypass the computer. ..."

Digital Camera Review 8.22 04-05-07 Read Full Review
Review (Summary): "The W30 is an improved version of the Pentax Optio W20, with the primary changes being increased depth and duration limits (up to about 10 feet and 2 hours from about 5 feet and 30 minutes in the earlier camera) and an increased maximum ISO sensitivity of 3200 (up from 1600 that was only available in a couple of modes in the W20). The camera features an aluminum body with 2.5 inch LCD monitor, 7.1 mega pixel sensor, and a 3X Pentax optical zoom lens that provides a 35mm film equivalent focal length range of 38 to 114 mm. As one would expect from a camera designed for even limited underwater work, fit and finish appear to be first-rate.

The Pentax Optio W30 offers water enthusiasts a limited underwater digital camera capability and terrestrial users a camera they won’t need to worry about if the environment suddenly turns wet. While the camera does a good job of image capturing when conditions are optimal, its foul-weather capability makes the W30 a viable choice for anyone who needs a compact digital that can shoot in places and conditions that would pose a risk to more typical cameras of this class."

Review (Summary): "Go to the beach, or sailing, or spend a lot of time poolside, or live in a rainy area? The Pentax Optio W30 may be ideal: it is waterproof, and can be dunked down to 3 meters (9.8 ft).

... the camera is also dust proof, and as long as some care is taken to ensure that the holes that cover the speaker and microphone on top are not plugged up, by dust or sand, it can be used in some environments that would put 99% of all other cameras out of commission. ...

Although we find the image compression at the highest image quality to be a bit too strong for our liking, the images the W30 produces are on par with many of today's compact cameras, and make very good prints. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Optio W30 is very similar to its predecessor the W20 in many ways...It has the same 7.1-megapixel resolution, the same 115k-pixel 2.5-in LCD monitor (although now with an anti-glare coating), and the same internal 3x zoom lens. It even bears a strong physical resemblance to the W20 although it is actually a couple of millimetres bigger and about five grams heavier. ...

Picture quality is about average for a 7MP compact. Exposure is generally good, although in standard multi-zone metering mode it does tend to under-expose in strong backlighting. Color rendition is very good, and the lens performs well despite its unusual configuration. ..."
