Ricoh Caplio GX100 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.60 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "The Ricoh Caplio GX100 digital camera offers a 10 megapixel sensor, wide-angle 24-72mm lens, RAW mode via the Adobe DNG format, a removable electronic viewfinder, external hot shoe, full creative control over exposure, and optical image stabilization. Not a bad specification, I think you'll agree! In an era where the manufacturers seem to be producing more and more identikit compact cameras with less and less features in an effort to encourage you to buy their much more profitable DSLR models, the Ricoh GX100 is a veritable breath of fresh air. ...

... overall, if you can live with the noisy ISO 400 setting and high price, the Ricoh GX100 is one of the best compact cameras yet for the discerning shutterbug. A real joy to use, quick to respond and offering a veritable treasure trove of advanced features, the GX100 definitely comes highly recommended."

Review (Summary): "The GX100 has a very high quality feel and it is streets ahead of many other digicams, with an aluminum chassis and textured exterior finish. One has the impression that this little Ricoh will still be able to get out and take pictures long after some others will have been sat on, dropped, or otherwise misused to death, as pocket cameras sometimes can be. Build quality is definitely commensurate with price in this instance. ...

... If Ricoh could clean up noise a bit more at ISO 80 and 100 without reducing resolving power, and put in a bigger buffer for raw shooting, the camera would get five stars. As It is I'll give it four out of five - it's that good. But whatever you do Ricoh, don't add smile detection. ..."

Review (Summary): "he GX100 has several features to set it apart from the majority of 10MP compacts, most interestingly a 3x zoom lens with an unparalleled wideangle capability, covering a range equivalent to 24-72mm on a 35mm camera. This equates to an increase in the diagonal field of view of around 20 degrees field of view compared to the 35 or 36mm short end of most compact camera zooms - that's a huge difference if you're shooting interiors or landscapes. The GX100 is also the world's first digital compact to offer an (optional) removable electronic viewfinder, which slips into the flash hot shoe and tilts upwards through 90 degrees. ...

To sum up, the GX100 isn't quite as good a camera as it thinks it is, because great features and handling cannot make up for a noisy sensor and questionable processing. ...But for the SLR user wanting a 'carry anywhere' pocket camera for mainly scenic work it has much to offer, ..."

Review (Summary): "Ricoh, that merry maverick of the camera world, has taken another step in the "luxe compact" category with the Caplio GX100 ($599, exclusively at Adorama), essentially a zoom-lensed version of the Ricoh GR Digital we tested in May 2006, with the added benefit of sensor-based image stabilization. ...

The GX100 is a highly competent camera that's easy and fun for both the casual shooter and the serious enthusiast to use. We like it. But we'd like it more if it cost a little less and had less noise at high ISOs."

Review (Summary): "The GX100 is officially the replacement for the GX8, but it is not only totally different from that camera, it is also totally unlike anything else on the market. With the GX100, Ricoh has set out to combine the quality, performance and versatility of a high-end semi-pro camera with the convenience and portability of a pocket compact. The result is a camera with a unique 24-75mm-equivalent zoom lens, a 10.1-megapixel 1/1.75-inch sensor with CCD-shift image stabilization, manual exposure options, RAW capture mode, external flash hot-shoe, 2.5-inch 230k monitor, all-metal body and a unique add-on electronic viewfinder with tilting eyepiece, which clips on to the hot-shoe. ...

... The Ricoh GX100 is an exceptional camera in many ways. It offers a level of control and versatility that keen photographers will love, and a unique range of features and options. Overall performance is excellent, and while image quality isn't perfect, it's good enough for most serious hobby photography, and the RAW mode allows for a wide range of picture adjustment. ..."
