Olympus Stylus 730 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.00 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "As with the rest of the Stylus line, the Olympus Stylus 730 digital camera is based around a weatherproof body that ensures wherever you go, your camera can go right along with you. It triumphs unhindered by rain, sleet, or snow that would see most digital cameras left at home, or in a sealed case, unable to get that chance-of-a-lifetime photo that sneaks up on you when you're not prepared. ...
... So, as we said of the 770 SW, most users of the Stylus 730 won't notice the muddled color unless they venture into high ISO territory, or enlarge low ISO images above 11x14. Shutter lag was also high on the 730. But as long as potential buyers are aware of these limitations, they can enjoy the truly excellent aspects of the Olympus Stylus 730, and happily enjoy stacks of sharp, colorful 4x6 images."

| Review: "The Olympus Stylus 730 is a slight design departure from its Stylus brethren. It is still weatherproof, but instead of the wedge-like, tapered design, the Stylus 730 is the same depth all the way across the camera. It's reminiscent of the Stylus 720 SW. At 0.8 inches thick, the Stylus 730 fits into the ultra-slim category. The Stylus 730 also features a very nice and large 3 inch LCD. It also takes pictures at 7.1 megapixels and a 3x optical zoom.
Image quality on the Stylus 730 was good, and in my opinion, slightly better than the Stylus 750 and Stylus 1000. I preferred the slightly cooler images that came out of the Stylus 730. They were also sharp and well exposed with some chromatic aberration (purple fringing) going on." |

| Hands-on Preview: "The Olympus Stylus 730 is the baby of the manufacturer's new fall lineup of stylish digital cameras. Still, this baby comes with a lot of enticing features. It has 7.1 megapixels, a tiny 3x optical zoom lens, and an enormous 3-inch LCD screen. This display screen is Olympus' first to reach the massive 3-inch plateau. The Olympus Stylus 730 doesn't have the shock proof designation of the earlier Stylus 720 SW, but is still considered "all weather" with its metal body and rubber sealants.
This 7.1-megapixel model is definitely a point-and-shoot with its vast number of scene modes and limited manual controls. It has a digital image stabilization mode that is new to the Stylus series, and it is functional in recording and playback modes. Besides the large display and new stabilization mode, the Stylus 730 adds an ISO 3200 setting to the mix. These are all great features, but the camera still suffers from other issues that are typical of Olympus cameras. The menu system is split so that some options appear in multiple places and there are menus within menus within menus. The ease of use factor just isn't there on the 730, unless using the camera's Simple mode which totally disables menus altogether." |

| Review: "One of the few constants of digital cameras (and most consumer electronics) is that substance should always be more important than style. Style can be a great boon, but it can't be the only aspect of a camera. Olympus' 7-megapixel Stylus 730 doesn't quite get that message.
The Olympus Stylus 730 is a pretty camera with some impressive design aspects, but it simply doesn't hold up for photography. If you really want a camera that can take a splash, consider the waterproof, shock-resistant Olympus Stylus 720 SW. The 720 SW shares some of the 730's flaws, but its images are less noisy, and it can take much more abuse with regard to being dropped or getting wet..." |
