Olympus Stylus 770 SW Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 6.50 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "This specialty point-and-shoot is pricey for an ultra compact, but it lets you take pictures in places where few other cameras can go: underwater. The Olympus Stylus 770 SW is submersible to a depth of 33 feet and will withstand temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit. ...
... In my still life tests, I found daylight shots to be pretty good, if a bit overexposed. The flash is a little weak, and flash shots showed some colored noise. ..."

| Review (Summary): "... Being able to take this camera down to 33 feet is not all. Olympus made it tough all over. You can drop it from five feet and it won't break (but it may get scratched and dented a bit). It can operate in temperatures down to 14 degrees, so no matter how cold the water gets, the 770 can handle it. Olympus also claims the 770 to be crushproof to 220lbf, which the promo materials define as pounds of pressure. ...
As far as diving goes, the Olympus Stylus 770 SW is a terrific companion. We wouldn't take it on a really deep dive, but anything that'll take you to perhaps 70 feet is apparently okay. We recommend, of course, that you observe the 33 foot depth limit, but we repeatedly took it much deeper and it never flooded. ..." |

| Review (Summary): "The third iteration of Olympus's compact shock and waterproof cameras, the Olympus Stylus 770 SW, takes the "SW" classification up a notch. In addition to its ability to withstand a drop from five feet, the latest SW model is now waterproof to a depth of 33 feet - a depth that no other camera can achieve without an underwater housing. If 33 feet isn't sufficient, an optional underwater housing is available. Adding to its appeal, this 7.1 megapixel point-and-shoot camera can also handle sub-freezing temperatures and withstand 220 pounds of pressure. At the same time, you won't have any problems slipping this tough but slender camera into a shirt pocket. ...
While its image quality may not stand up to some of the competition and its feature set won't necessarily impress, the Olympus Stylus 770 SW is one tough camera that will go where no other point-and-shoot models can (or should) go. ..." |

| Review: "There aren't many waterproof compact cameras out there, let alone one made to survive drops of up to 5 feet. Olympus designed its 7.1-megapixel Stylus 770SW to do just that, providing real competition for Pentax's waterproof Optio W30. By its tough nature alone, this Olympus makes an ideal choice if you routinely shoot in adverse conditions. I took it skiing with me as part of this review, and it fared better than I did on a couple of falls. In fact, despite three days of chilly temperatures and a lot of bumps, the Stylus 770SW still came out shooting.
Images from the Stylus 770SW weren't perfect, but that's not surprising given this camera is built more for extreme durability than optical purity. For example, our test images looked slightly soft overall and had more image artifacts than we're used to in a camera in this price range, though you can't jump into a swimming pool and shoot images underwater with those cameras. ..." |

Hands-on Preview: "With a body sturdier than any digital camera on the market, the 7.1-megapixel Olympus Stylus 770SW makes its debut. This model follows the 720SW that had the same resolution and a similar sturdy body. The 770SW makes a few improvements though. Not only can it take a five feet fall, it can also venture at a water depth of 33 feet and can withstand up to 220 lbs. If that's not enough, the Stylus 770SW can operate in temperatures as cold as 14 degrees Fahrenheit.
In the end, the pictures aren't much better. Shutter lag is a problem, causing plenty of blinked eyes and past action. Blur plagued action shots, and the camera didn't shoot well at all in low light. The sturdy Stylus 770SW, despite all its classifications, seems to take pictures best in sunny conditions." |

| Review (Summary): "Hard on the heels of the recently tested Olympus Mju 725SW comes the latest in the company's ruggedised compact range, the 770SW. Olympus says it is: 'the world's first compact camera that’s waterproof to 10m, shockproof against falls from up to 1.5m and freezeproof to -10 degrees Celsius. What's more, this rock-solid wonder is also crushproof to an unbelievable 100kg!'.
Picture quality is good at the Super High Quality and at lower ISO settings. Ease of use (under 'normal' conditions at least) is built-in, but the lack of any real manual control other than +/-2EV exposure compensation means anyone looking for more control might want to steer clear. ..."
