Nikon Coolpix L12 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.22 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "You just can't expect a whole lot from a $200 camera. Budget-priced shooters might be reliable, but they very seldom offer anything unique or high-end. The 7-megapixel Nikon Coolpix L12 bucks this trend by including two premium features in its unassuming, inexpensive form. ...

Even though it includes features I was surprised to see on a budget camera, the Nikon Coolpix L12 simply has too many problems for me to recommend it. While face detection and optical image stabilization are both very nice, they can't make up for the camera's slow shooting, painfully long flash recycle time, and inconsistent low-light shots. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Nikon Coolpix L12 features a seven megapixel CCD linked to a Nikkor-branded 3x optical zoom lens. The L12's lens is just a little wider than most, at 35 to 105mm equivalent. The Coolpix L12 couples this with the company's lens-shift VR (Vibration Reduction) technology, which can be very useful when shooting in poor lighting. A new Anti-Shake button, which simultaneously activates VR, High ISO, and Best Shot Selector, assures that "pictures will be steady, sharp, and stunning," according to Nikon. ...

At this modest price level, you can't expect high-end performance but you do get good performance along with a suite of in-camera image enhancement tools that really matter. And you get Nikon's excellent Macro performance, too (including a flash that works very well in Macro mode). ..."

Review (Summary): "The Nikon Coolpix L12 ($179) is an entry-level camera that includes something not normally found on cameras in this price range: image stabilization. That's on top of the 7.1 Megapixel CCD, 3X optical zoom lens, 2.5" LCD display, AF-assist lamp, in-camera redeye removal, and more. ...

... The Nikon Coolpix L12 is one of a very select group of entry-level cameras to offer image stabilization for under $200. Its closest competitor is probably the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LS75 which, up until recently, I didn't even think they sold in the U.S. The Coolpix L12 is a decent camera if you're doing mostly outdoor, bright light photography. If you'll be doing a lot of low light shooting, or want to minimize noise, then I'd steer clear of the Coolpix L12. ..."
