Canon Powershot TX1 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.00 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "Announced back in February just before this year's PMA, the PowerShot TX1 is an unusual offshoot of the hugely popular IXUS / ELPH range that attempts to straddle the divide between digital stills and digital video cameras with its unusual vertical styling and 720p HDTV video capture. Despite its diminutive dimensions (it's little bigger than a pack of playing cards) the TX1 packs a fairly impressive punch, offering a 10x optically stabilized zoom, 7.1MP CCD, vari-angle LCD and 1080i HDTV component video output. ...

... I'd really, really recommend going to a store and trying it for yourself before committing; this is a cool, fun gadget with surprisingly good image quality, but for me it's not a camera I found easy to live with - especially not at the best part of $500. I'd personally forget the movie stuff, save my self $150 and go for a Panasonic TZ3, which might not be as cute but has a more useful zoom range and handles like a proper camera. ..."

Review of HD Video (Summary): "Having tested the stills capability of the TX1, I moved with great anticipation on to the video side of things. Any fears about ropey video quality, which I'd read about in one or two reviews, were unfounded. The TX1 is not going to be anyone's best friend on the set of the latest HD blockbuster, but in comparison to the other flash based camcorder options out there (think Xacti HD1), and its eminent pocketability, there's little to complain about.

When I first downloaded the vids and looked at them on my Macbook Pro, I thought they were a little soft and undersaturated, but when I ran them through my 720p LCD TV they really seemed to pop with detail and colour. Seeing as that's the main output I'll watch them on, I am very happy with the results."

Review (Summary): "The Canon TX1 is an unusual hybrid digital camera optimized for video capture. It features a 10x f/3.5-5.6 optically stabilized zoom lens, a seven megapixel imager, and a Movie mode with resolutions up to 1,280 x 720 pixels and frame-rates up to 60 frames per second in QVGA resolution. ...

... This still/video hybrid is surprisingly capable taking stills or video. While the stills tend toward the high contrast, over saturated style preferred by many snapshooters, the video is nothing short of high definition in a letterbox format. Despite my initial misgivings, I grew rather fond of the little thing. Maybe when I grow up and have extremely large hands, I'll actually be able to shoot with it."<,/P>

Review (Summary): "Every now and again, a company will make a product just to turn some heads; sometimes this is called a statement piece. Usually these products sport unusual designs and fantastical feature sets. With its PowerShot TX-1, which includes a 10x optical zoom lens, 7.1 megapixel CCD sensor, optical image stabilization, face detection, and the capability to record high-definition 1,280x720-pixel video at 30 frames per second, Canon was definitely trying to make a statement.

If you absolutely have to have a combo still camera/720p HD camcorder, the Canon PowerShot TX-1 is probably the best bang for the buck. Its two serious competitors, the Sanyo Xacti HD2 and Panasonic SDR-S150 both cost significantly more, and in the case of the Sanyo, you get lower quality video and stills, but a more comfortable-to-use design. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Canon PowerShot TX1 made waves in February as Canon's first attempt at a true hybrid digital camera-camcorder. The 7.1-megapixel TX1 borrows elements like image stabilization, stereo audio, a wind filter, and video editing from bigger cameras like the PowerShot S3 and newer S5. The TX1's compact style and palette of exposure modes is similar to the Digital Elph series of slim cameras: automatic and scene modes are the order here. With a Digic III image processor comes trendy face detection technology, but the TX1 will be noted most for its high definition video capabilities.

... Canon's concept is good - a solid digital camera with awesome high definition video that can record just as well and as long as a camcorder and still snap album-worthy photos – but that's not what the TX1 is. It's an average camera coupled with an underdeveloped movie mode, stuck in a body that’s too small. ..."
