Panasonic HDC-SD1 HD SD Camcorder Review

Review (Summary): "... the HDC-SD1 is a looker: sleek, compact, and sexy. It also boasts some impressive features, including the best optical image stabilization system we’ve seen this year. In other ways, this model left us wanting more: a mic jack but no headphone jack, a single “mystery” zebra setting, and a mediocre focus assist. What’s more, AVCHD support remains scarce, begging the question of whether this is the time to buy the HDC-SD1.
The HDC-SD1 looks great, has an earthquake-beating OIS system, and produces decent HD video (more so when compared to standard definition camcorders rather than HDV camcorders). It’s also a Panasonic that point-and-shooters won’t be intimidated by, with a friendlier joystick menu than we’ve seen in the past. It’s also the first consumer camcorder to record HD footage to durable and convenient SD/SDHC memory cards. Yet despite the promise of AVCHD to bring HD video to the cassette-averse masses, the codec just isn’t ready for prime time, with few editing options available and no DVD player support. ..."

| Review (Summary): "Once in a while we get to try out products that aren’t just interesting or cool but mark the start of a revolution. The Panasonic HDC-SD1 camcorder is such a device – a camcorder that can capture images at 1080i resolution without the need for tapes. It’s not the first consumer level High Definition camcorder on the market, with Sony's HDR-HD3 being its second stab at the market. However, while the HD1 and HD3 record onto MiniDV tapes the Panasonic HDC-SD1 records onto SD card. While HDV is a great format, I’ve always felt that it almost anachronistic to be using tapes in 2007 when it has been outmoded in every other sphere. ...
The HDC-SD1 is a fantastic cutting edge piece of technology that finally does away with the need for tapes. It’s small and light, delightfully easy to use and most of all takes superb high definition images. The AVCHD codec means that few editing applications will handle it, but there are already two packages on the market on the way and more to follow. If you like being at the cutting edge, the HDC-SD1 is highly recommended." |

| Review (Summary): "I was skeptical about a camcorder that records high-definition video onto an SD Card. What kind of compression is going on behind the scenes to make it fit? My doubts soon faded-the Panasonic HDC-SD1 captures (and stores) video of exceptional quality. However, for the moment, the compression format it uses introduces a different problem: an inability to edit your video. ...
Since the camcorder has component outputs and an HDMI port, however, you can play back the unedited footage in high-definition on an HDTV. Video I captured in well-lit settings looked gorgeous, and even video taken in relatively dim, indoor rooms looked surprisingly good-and much better than footage from the standard-definition camcorders I've seen. ..." |
