Sony Cyber-shot DSC-F88 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 10.00 (out of 10)
The Sony DSC-F88 is one of the latest Sony Cyber-shot digital cameras, dramatically advancing the flip lens design seen previously in the DSC-F55 and F55DX. The DSC-F88 uses the lens and sensor technology first developed for Sony's DSC-T1, the ultra-compact assembly letting Sony pack a 5 megapixel sensor, 3x Carl Zeiss zoom lens and an optical viewfinder into a surprisingly small, swiveling lens assembly molded to fit the smooth curve of the camera's top. . . . .

Born of parts borrowed from the popular 5-megapixel Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T1 and the newly minted Sony Cyber Shot DSC-P100, the soon-to-ship Sony Cyber Shot DSC-F88 marks the U.S. debut of a camera that's entering its third generation in Europe and Japan.

Never shy of giving the consumer an almost bewildering array of choices, in May 2004 Sony added yet another (its fifth) 5 megapixel, 3x zoom camera, the DSC-F88 to its 2004 range. Seasoned Sony watchers will immediately recognize the inner swivel lens design, which has made several appearances in Sony's product lineup since the DSC-F1 back in 1996. What makes the F88 slightly different to its predecessors is the inclusion of a 3x Carl Zeiss zoom lens (which uses the same folded optics as the Cyber-Shot T1) and an optical viewfinder; it is also a little larger than the F1/F5/F55/F77 models that came before it.

Sony's latest jack-of-all-trades is a master of more than one. While its easy operation and versatile automated and manual exposure controls will please both beginners and more advanced photographers, the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-F88 boasts very good macro capabilities and a robust burst mode perfect for action photography. Only a few spotty performance figures such as atrocious shutter lag under low-contrast lighting and a middle-of-the-road feature set limit this well-rounded 5-megapixel shooter.

The DSC-F88 is one of Sony's newest compact digicams. It features a 5 megapixel CCD, 3x optical zoom, and 300 degree rotating lens. The optical system is the same vertical design as seen in the DSC-T1. The F88 features exposure modes from fully automatic to manual control. In addition, it offers a Program mode, 10 Scene modes, and a Movie mode that shoots unlimited video at 640x480 at 16 fps. In our review, we will test the camera to see where it stands with regard to performance.

While image quality is good overall, it's kept from greatness for two reasons. Number one is that images have a fuzzy, "video capture" look to them, which tends to blur out details. Secondly, shadow noise seems a bit high. These issues will be a concern only if you're printing 8 x 10"s or larger, or viewing your photos at 100% on-screen. I will compliment Sony on their good color and low purple fringing, though.
